Bought One of My Dream Cars on Monday... M3

Congratulations! Being an M3 owner myself, I know exactly what you're talking about. And I think carbon black metallic is a beautiful color. I have also loved the M3 ever since I saw it. Same with the Ferrari 360 Modena. Enjoy the car, I really think it's the best all around sports car for the money. And I really like the SMG transmission as well though it takes a little bit of time to get smooth with it. I've been using Menzerna products for the polishing. I just recently switched from their Full Molecular Jacket as my last step product to Blackfire Wet Diamond. I found this new Blackfire has more depth than FMJ. Anyways, congrats man!

Thanks! Hey are those CSL's 19? I've been pondering getting a set :)

csl's are very nice but can i make a recommendation? be different.... no offense but around here at least it seems like evrybody gets CSL's.get something with a nice machined lip or something

Yup I totally agree, ever since they made the CSL wheels a factory option, it's become very played out. I cringe everytime I see one. I got mine when the M3 CSL first came out, and you could not get the wheels here. I waited 6 months on a waiting list to get them imported from Germany. And I enjoyed being one of a very few people who had them in North America. Ah I miss those days haha.

Congrats on the new purchase. Keep an eye on the smg and engine though. Two guys we race with have e46 M3's and both had their engines blow, 02' blew on the street and the 04' blew on the track at Sebring. All 02's should have replaced engines if I'm not mistaken by now. Personally I would have gone for an e39 M5, love my friends'

damn, they blew the motors with smg? how?
the e39 m5 is one of my dream cars along with the e30 m3 and Z3 M coupe. sorry....i go off on bmw love rants once in a while.....time for a drive!

No, the motor itself has some flaws, supposedly only the 02's suffered it (and all were supposed to have engines replaced under warrenty) but quite a few people with later years had the same trouble. Only reason I know some of this stuff is when I almost bought an e39 M5 I was checking into the M3 to see what was up after they had those issues. Though I don't like smg either, or flappy paddles for that matter, didn't care for the F430's new F1 system on the track either just to borring with paddles, no involvement. But I'm a little different then normal since I was raised around auto/boat racing my whole life lol.

Zilla - check to see his your 02' had a replced engine, most 02's if not all should have by now.

go drive a new vw gti with DSG. its amazing how fast it shifts and that car as a whole its leaps and bounds better than the mk4. flappy paddles come around to you when your trying to get around a track super fast, but of course im a manual owner haha

You're correct about the '02's having engine problems, but its the rod bearings that need replacing b/c they can fail. My car had that problem taken care of a while back, and thusly it has an updated warranty on the engine. Til '08, full coverage on the engine and tranny. It also has a full maintenance warranty til then as well, so BMW covers oil changes and brake replacement (pads) for me as well. Course, they only recommend an oil change every 1 year (or 15K miles) so it ain't really that great of a deal...lol.

On the CSL's, I live in a smaller town and while there are tons of nice cars here (E63's, Ferrari's, etc) there are only 3 or 4 M3's here counting mine, none with CSL's. So I don't get to see them as much as you guys do :)

And on the VW... last I read, BMW's SMG system was faster than anyone elses (on setting 6, with DSC off 80millisecond shift time). Including Ferrari (100 millisecond shift time I believe). Not bad technology for a 60K car vs say... 200K plus for the Ferrari's :) Now for some really fast shifting... Ferrari's F1 cars shift at about 40 miliseconds... that would damn near break your neck under hard acceleration!

nah the new VW system is the fastest now. the new m3 is supposed to have a better SMG but i havent heard anything about it yet. but the DSG tranny has 2 cluches so 1 of them is always engaged, making the shifts just that much quicker. its faster than the regular stick shift GTI's. but i think a manual M3 is a tad quicker in a straight line than smg, i could be wrong.

Most magazines haven't been able to get an SMGII equiped to hook up as fast as a 6 speed. But then, most guys on the forums seem to agree that it depends on the driver. I've driven both, if one is faster than the other it's damn hard to tell :) The SMG setup is heavier...though not by much. That could affect the overall outcome.

Neat about the VW though, their website mentions nothing about it being fast nor it actually being an SMG system, just that you can shift it... though the acronym for the system seems to indicate it is sequential.

Yeah, I did a little research on it. Nice. It has 2 clutches... dunno how that works...haha.

Tiptronic sucks... that's just an auto with the gear limiter. Though the new 997 turbo is supposedly faster with Tip vs the 6 speed.... though don't tell anyone at 6speedonline Hahahahaha :)

Couple of you are on 6speed? Was on there awhile ago when we had our Porsches, but something happened to the board awhile ago. Was redone or something? Wouldn't let me log in anymore, I know others hand that issue. I forgot even what my screen-name was b/c when I put in my email adresses it didn't recognize any of them for password etc? Oh well, I'll register again on there, sometime lol.
