Boss foam cannon first use and misc problems

Tried the Surface Prep today. Used it first, then the Surface Wash after.

The car has 2 layers of FK1000p.

The Surface Prep didn’t put a dent in the FK1000p.

It foams up up and rinses clean just like the Wash and the Poly Gloss.

I then applied another layer of FK1000p. It should be ready for winter now.

PS: I spilled a bit of the Prep. It stained the concrete walkway. I didn’t notice it until I put everything away.

I`ll be danged. When did the Surface Prep hit the streets? I see on the GG website it looks like it`s just gallon size for now?

Thanks for the info!

I got it from Griot`s directly in their Labor Day sale.

The gallon was the only size listed.

Gotta tell you guys - I have an MTM. It`s old - maybe 5 years? I bought it online & it was around $60 - which was a deal at the time. It works fine prolly has the wrong jets but who cares.

But, we are getting hosed on the cost of these things. I see them on Amazon Lightening deals every other day for like $13. Then I go on the AR Blue pressure washer site and see them for thirty some dollars. But for some reason when you buy these from a detailing place they are pushing $100.

Well the first few attempts didn`t go so well. Initially I ordered the cannon with soap and poly gloss from a sale. Well they were back ordered a month so I anxiously waited. Then I found out that the new shipments didn`t include a tip so I had to order one which added another week. After almost 6 weeks I was ready to go with my 1800 psi Ryobi, MTM PF22 gun, and the cannon. The wives care was now 6 weeks dirty and I knew I would have to get the buckets, but I really wanted to see how much dirt and grime it could get off alone. I mixed up a batch of the foaming surface wash in the boss jug. At first it didn`t do much of anything and a few adjustments on the tip and the nozzle and I eventually got a semi-thin watery slurry. Not much of a foam at all. I tested all the connection again and tried again and same problem. It was getting late and I was losing light so I just rinsed it I broke out the buckets and just finished the car the old fashion way. It did seem to get a lot of the dirt off, but since it was covered I probably could have done just as good with just a pressure wash.

The next day I gave the Avant a go, but this time I used the purple metering tip and put the foaming wash into the cannon directly. This is supposed to be quicker and easier as you don`t have to measure since the tip will automatically meter how much soap is used. I got a small amount of foam this time, but nothing like shaving cream or anywhere near it. I kept playing with the nozzle and the flow, but no matter what I did I still couldn`t get foam. At best it was a watery slurry of soap sputtering out. Sadly after a couple of minutes I turned it off and looked down and realized I just used about 80% of the soap!! Not only did I not get foam, but I just went through what should have been 10+ car washes in a few minutes! It did get most of the dirt off, but it also took about 10 minutes to rinse off all that excess soap from the car.

Not sure if it`s the adapter to the mtm gun or the adapter to the cannon or both causing the problem, but the cannon failed pretty bad. I went online to see if it`s a common problem and found this video from auto fanatic.

The video has pretty much the same setup with the cannon and the mtm gun that I`m using and sadly he had almost the exact same results where he got a thin slurry or watery soap at best. Then he put on the mtm cannon and wow what a difference. I also noticed the same guy did a video on just the foaming surface wash using the mtm cannon and the results where amazing.

Not sure if it`s just the setup or if I got a bad unit, but it`s going back to Griots.

Late to the party... but to me this sounds like the Cannon is missing the Orifice, or a defective orifice.

The first picture is an MTM cannon, the second is the Griot’s cannon. Mixture is the same, max foam tip in the Griot’s, Sun joe electric washer. I saw no difference to be honest and used about the same amount.

Well if mine looked like that I would be happy. Basically I don`t get any foam at all it just comes out as a clear liquid.

Ah, I`d missed that earlier, thanks for posting it. Yes indeed, you oughta be ready for winter!

Wonder if the FK will degrade if you keep using the Surface Prep and/or whether it`ll be impervious to both that and the Surface Wash over time....

I’m planning to apply another coat of FK1000p this weekend. That’ll make 3 layers.

UPDATE:

I ran into some concrete-cutting slop that got onto both sides of the car and all four wheel-wells.

It was on the car for about 20 minutes. I got home and went to work.

I had to rinse the wheels off first, (they were still hot). I then decided to try to blast off as much as I could before I washed the car. That removed about 90% of the slop.

Then came the Surface Prep. Some small spots remained. Then the Surface Wash. Still had the spots.

So,being the LB that I am, I got my UWW, sprayed the affected areas, wiped them off with my mitt. They came right off.

As long as I had a shred of ambition left, I applied the PolyGloss. I`m really liking that stuff. Very forgiving and is streak-free,even on glass.

I did notice that the tires still have remnants of that crap and still some in the wheel-wells,too. As it was 85 degrees and I was in full-sun yesterday afternoon, I just ran out of steam.

PS: No degradation on the FK1000p. I`ll try to get my 3rd layer on this weekend.

PSS: The car was washed last week.

Older: Thanks for the updates! Glad to hear the system’s really working for you.

I’ve really enjoyed using it as well, but have worried there was an element of liking it because I have a predisposition to like it (Long time Griots appreciator, made a non-insignificant investment to acquire it). Even though prior to it’s release I had placed myself in a purchasing hold (trying to use up what I’ve got), I’ve got zero regrets adding it to the arsenal.

Oneheadlite- I commend you for considering the possibility of Confirmation Bias. Glad you (really :D ) do like it!

Heh heh, I`m gonna be the #1 Cheerleader Who`s Never Actually Tried the Stuff where this one is concerned, every positive review makes me more enthusiastic.

I never particularly liked Griot`s products in the past. I hated the waxes and the buffing compounds.

I`m happy to see they really stepped up their game. Their drying towels are the best I`ve ever used.

Nice people,I wish them well.

Older- Gee, this approach is working well for you, huh?!?

It`s really working as advertised. A refreshing change from the norm.

It would be an immense time and effort saver if I could have my pw set-up already hooked up and ready to go. As it is,I have to set it all up and break it down every time.

One of it`s big advantages is the ability to get into all the nooks and crannies with no extra effort on my part. These egg-crate grilles and fog-light surrounds can be a PIA. Oh,and the fender vents, too.

It`s also the only way to clean the wheel-wells. There`s no room to get a brush in there with these monstrous wheels and tires I have on both cars. I can barely get the pw head in there on the Jaguar-235/35ZR20 on the front and 265/30ZR20 on the rear.
In comparison, the Charger`s are almost SUV-like,having 245/45ZR20 front and rear.

These are stock,OEM set-ups. The only way to get a brush in there would be to pull the wheels. Yeah,I`ll be doing that. Never in my lifetime.

Ever try and squeeze a wheel brush...like a Daytona speed brush in those tight spaces?
