Blue Jeans transfer to Beige Leather!

I used the Woolite HE diluted to almost 20:1 applying it with MF and follow up with some water damped MF. Finished it off with Danase Rx. Worked like a charm.

I have had good luck with P21s TAW on beige leather in an Infiniti.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I have a client with an 09 G37x coupe in which his leather jacket transferred onto the leather on the center console and discolored it. I'm going to see what I can do with the TAW.

so, what is the best proactive protection against staining of light leather? I heard a couple shout-outs for zainos leather in a bottle, are they the best preventative measure you can take without putting seat covers on?

You need to use a fluorocarbon protector as these are the only ones that offer an effective protection against dye transfer on leather.

Products that claim to protect or 'contain' protectors generally do not work at all. They can be tested to see how effective they are using a crust leather.

Most 'conditioners' that claim to protect the leather do not offer any effective protection at all - suppliers have switched from 'conditioners' to 'protectors' without changing the product.

Can you give me an example of a protector please? I would greatly appreciate it.

As I linked to earlier, you can try Jeff's protector. I don't have the test data with me, so I can't give you any empirical evidence of its effectiveness. It is pretty inexpensive, so a test bottle shouldn't set you back more than ten dollars or so.

Hey there,

Having the same problem with my beige leather seats that got dye transfer.

I have used Leatherique Prestige Cleaner with little to no success, tried Leather Master Strong Cleaner with more success and used Woolite 10:1 but still got leftovers thats just driving me crazy and today I applied Leatherique Rejuvenate Oil with a little hope that it will be my saviour.

I dont think it will really take it all of and looking for other alternative such as the steel wool and APC but thats just sound strange to me since if I cannot remove it with a cleaner, that means the dye penetrate too deeply into the leather pores and how can steel wool take care of it?

Eliran,

It will probably require a redye if it's set. I've also got some jean transfer on my soft lexus cream seats and i've tried everything under the sun from LTT to Leather Master's to a Magic Eraser... oh well..

If you have tried LTT and LM products with no success it does not mean that the products do not work simply that the problem is not a 'cleaning' one and the dye transfer is more severe or has been on too long. Removing dye transfer is a process with up to 5 steps. The LTT dye transfer kit is a process of 2 stages. These are the first 2 steps that technicians always take when repairing this type of problem. In most cases these first 2 steps will resolve the problem but if it doesn't then you have to move onto the next stages which involve solvents and then recolouring. The first steps can be undertaken as a DIY method but then requires technical knowledge beyond that.

Once the dye has been on the leather for some time OR if the dye is a very aggressive one (this you will have no way of telling) it will have moved into the finish on the leather and will be much harder to get rid of. Once you are at this stage there is nothing that will remove it without damaging the finish on the leather which will then need replacing. You can have the area recoloured and refinished and sometimes this is the only route to go down.

It is far better to protect your leather from the start (or after you have the recolouring process done) to help inhibit this type of problem from occuring. A good quality fluorcarbon protector (There are very few effective protectors on the market please test them as some products claiming to be protectors do not work at all) together with regular cleaning will not allow the build up of dye transfer on pale leather.

Hope this helps

Ok just finished cleaning my leather with Leatherique PC and the seats came like new except couple of blue areas from my jeans.

Do you think I would be able to take it off with a steamer and APC?

Magic erasers also remove the finish in the process and should only be used for cleaning if the top finish is going to be replaced.

Thanks Judy for the info.

Eligran,

Tried it.. didn't help my cause. Good product for ink though, had a valet that left an ink stain in a BMW tan leather and a couple of applications poof, it was gone.
