Every year or two I have to replace the block off plug for the heater hose. Made of hard rubber it cracks and splits and the anti freeze sprays out. Is there a permanent block off plug of a different material that I can buy?

How about a brass or copper 3/4" plug used for PEX.?

Fun Fact
always found it interesting how they came to be known as freeze plugs or expansion plugs, when they are actually called core plugs or casting plugs, and are needed due to the way the engine block is casted. I learned the true term early on, and even some of the best mechanics will call them freeze-out plugs. I guess its kind of like clip vs magazine or shell vs hull vs casing, and if you say it wrong everyone gets all up in arms lol. No matter what is said, people understand what is being referenced I think.
 
I never had this plug problem until I had the radiator replaced. I am the second owner of this car, from 1996 to 2012 there was no problem. Then in 2013, a year after the radiator was replaced, I needed to replace the plug. This plug I have now is the third since the new radiator. Could the mechanic have taken the better made, long lasting original part and replace it with a piece of rubber?
