Hi All,

I'm hopefully ordering a brand new VW Golf in the next few days, most likely in "Anthracite Gray Metallic" - that's the UK color anyway.

I religiously spend an hour or so each sunday washing the exterior and cleaning the interior of my car. I use either Autoglym or Halfords carwash, and dry with Halford MF towels.

Every month to six weeks I polish and wax the paintwork. I'm not obsessive but I'm happy to spend an hour each weekend and a few hours every X weeks to keep my car clean and new looking.

I'd like some advice on a sensible "regime" to deal with brand new dark metallic paint, not sure if VW paint calls for anything special?

To date I've got a small collection of product including Meguiars #9 and #26, Autoglym Polish, MER polish, Halfords Carwash, and some *really* good wax and cleanser (separate) from a chap called "Wax Wizard" who does handmade Zymol type/quality products.

The only source of Microfiber towels I've found in the UK is Halfords, a large national auto parts chain.

I'm in the UK which limits the stuff we have access to - I remember a year or so ago when I asked the only real option was to import, has this changed or does the UK market still end at "turtle-wax" :-)

TIA

Paul

The Halfords MF towels are ok, the heavy duty one is to rough for paintwork IMO. TurtleWax also sell MF towels (part numbers T4060, T4061 & T4062). I have not used them but from memory somebody said they were quite good. By far the best ones are from the group buy for Neatitems MF towels, these are very good but you pay the extra shipping from the USA (which is a few pounds). Meguairs.co.uk also sell MF towels

I have not tried the WaxWizard stuff but have read good reports on other forums. I am not keen on the Autoglym or Halfords shampoo I prefer the P21S shampoo (very slick) from www.Iauto.co.uk.

You can now order Zaino from Germany http://www.viper-lifestyle.de/zainoengl.htm. Blitz wax and other One Grand products from frost.co.uk. Some Autoint products from

I think the situation is getting better in the UK, getting hold of nice products, why not do a review of the WaxWizard stuff and post some pictures?

Hi everybody,

I have used Wax Wizard in the past, originally for Zymol and then when he parted company from Zymol for a few of his own branded products. I use his cleanser (almond smell, white, similar in use to HD Cleanse, described as 'paintable' so no oily residue) and his detergent-free shampoo. Neither of these include any harsh solvents, so the advertising goes.

I haven't contacted WW for some time, as these products last quite a while, but his website is no longer operating. I know he had some aggro with Zymol, and on Zymol's website there is a warning notice about misrepresentation of their products, so maybe there's some deeper story there. I have always found Mark Underwood (the WW) very helpful and obliging, and it's a pity if we lose a specialist in the UK.

I've seen the MF towels in Halfords and they look a little rough to me, so I'll stick to my Zymol towels. At the moment I use HD Cleanse/Omega Glaze and Blitz. When it's a little warmer I'll try Autoglym High Gloss Polish in between the glaze and wax. I also have a packet of Halfords clay, I'll try that on my Rover first as it has a bullet-proof clear cost, unlike the MG (with water based paint) which breeds swirls if you look at it too hard.

Thanks for the info Steve.

Regards, Kes.

thanks all for the info. any pointers on info for new paint, you'd assume it's be immaculate and need fairly "gentle" treatment?

Paul, your right, be gentle with your paint, with a brand new car there should not be to many swirls. Wash, polish & wax then enjoy your new car :)

There is a huge amount of advice on preparing new cars, just use the search button.

Kes, welcome to the forum (quite a few Brits here now), I have not used the Halfords clay so it would be nice to see how you get on with it, dont foget to use lots of lubricant and you cant go to far wrong. The best stuff I have used is 3M clay (part number 38070) at around 15-20 pounds it is very good. MGF - nice car. If you need any help, just ask.

Kept hearing neatitems.com crop up so dopped them an email - postage sounds like it's charged at published USPS rates (rather than the trumped up charges a lot of companies seem to make up) so I've ordered 10, not many but enough to help take care of one car, I think :-)

Which Autoglym polish? The Super Resin Polish or the Extra Gloss protection?

If you use the one with the cleaners then the One Grand Glaze would be a wasted effort. The HD Cleanse might clean better than the polish so that could be a good option for a smoother clearer paint surface.

Also if the OG glaze is used and you go straight to the Extra Gloss protection (no cleaners/polishes) it won't bond because of the oils and fillers in the glaze.

swirl mark prevention is geared in gentle washing and drying

often quick detailing a car with minute particulates can add to swirling

also bad quality (any kind of towels) can lead to swirling

you can help this by

-using a ton of water in washing, rinsing your mitt, keeping a clean surface of the mitt on your car when swiping

-only quick detailing your car after you wash with a clean soft cloth (preferably a plush microfiber)

-do a cd test on your microfiber to see where it stands, a quality microfiber will not readily scratch a cd with a fair amount of pressure

-having a good protectant (preferably polymer) will aid in the prevention of swirls and will protect you car (from UV rays) from elements and will make it easier to wash and keep you car clear. really good sealents like Klasse and Zaino will also shine it like no other

-only wax a completely clean car

-apply wax, wash, and dry in back and forth non-swirling motions (you can't have swirls if you nothing get's into contact with your car to cause a swirl).

those are some of the ones that I can think of for now, good luck and just enjoy detailing :up

Posted from Idaho Wednesday, delivered this morning - always find it ironic that you can order stuff from half way around the world and it arrives quicker than if you mailorder it from London.

Red Porsche suv
the car sits under a carport , 1 step did a huge improvement. if the car was garaged than a full correction was the choice.
i use 2 dots of sip and 1 spray of 205 on a lc orange cutting pad with flex da. blackfire wet diamond as protection.
as time frame this car was record, i arrive at 11 and at 18 was done , was exterior and interior detail , the interior leather was brushed with cleaner / conditioner , was a nonstop job.
one of the best color combo in and out i have seen so far.
