Black panels on 91' Syclone

I just got a GMC Syclone a while back and have been testing various cleaners on the black trim. The trim on this car covers about 40% of the car. Because of this if its not clean the truck looks like garbage. I have tried black magic, and a few other silicone based cleaners. The only one I have found that works well and goes on without streaking is Stoners Trim Shine. All others leave a splotchy looking shine all over the place. Here is a picture of how it came out with Stoners Trim Shine:

I think it came out and goes on well for the same reason I don't like it though. Its Aerosol. It oversprays onto the rest of the truck and I have to rub a damp microfiber towel all over the truck to take it off.

I have seen some things about moose wax. Would that work for this application? If not then what would be ideal for this?

Black magic did work well on the tunneau cover however. Because its somewhat porous and Black Magic is thicker it really works well.

Thanks,

Alex

That's an awesome truck. I love the Syclones and Typhoons. You may want to try Adam's V.R.T. or Poorboy's Trim Restorer as well.

How do you like the truck? I hear they're absolute beasts.

Oh good gawd I LOVE your truck!!! :bow

Try Meguiar's #38 trim gel. It leaves a fairly matte finish, has very good durability and is easy to apply. Make sure you use THIN coats and I think you'll be pleased.

I don't know much about the Typhoon or Syclone. What are they other than obviously factory modified trucks?

Made is '91, '92 and '93 in very low numbers. The Syclone was based on the S10 and the Typhoon was based on the S10 Blazer. They both had 4.3 liter turbo charged V6 motors with full time all wheel drive.

have you tried Poorboy's Trim Restorer? it's pretty good at cleaning the trim, like wax stains, and it removes the wax, not just covers it up. i also heard AIO is also good, although i have yet to try it.

beautiful truck you got there.

if i'm not mistaken, i think they're turbo-charged 3.8 v-6s powered trucks/SUVs, with a tuned suspension. basically a truck/SUV version of the Buick Grand National, at least that's how i thought of them.

Like a truck version of the GN?

As fast as a GN?

Thanks for the info. :wavey

Pretty much. They were mid-13 second rides off the showroom floor which was fassssst in the early '90's. With the aftermarket following they have now 10 second Sy's and Ty's are pretty common.

Reid...they were 4.3L 6's.

Haha Reid. I was editing my post to exactly that! :lol

man, you go to post a reply and look what happens! :D they should have real time updating or something.

mike: thanks for the corrections. i just remember when they came out i just thought of them as the truck/suv versions of a GN. but i forgot they were also AWD. i remember they couldn't handle much load either, something like 500 pounds.

Here is my review of Sonus Total Eclipse. I used it the other day on a new ashtray cover for my Jeep and it looks excellent.

You can also try one of the 303 Products. Good luck. :)

That was a great writeup thanks! You mentioned that it is water based. Do you think that will help or hinder this application?

Thanks for the recommendations.

So far this truck has been as fun as can be. With a 4.3L V6 with 280hp and 350 ft/lbs of torque and AWD its as fun as anything i have driven in a while. ;)

It was even garage kept its whole life so the paint is in great shape. You can tell because when you flick the rubber window guide it snaps back to the window. Not weathered at all.

Is the surface too textured for AIO?

Its actually very smooth. That is part of the problem. If what you are applying does not go on well then it streaks very easily.

Yup!

Syclones were made in 91 only. 2995 made.

Typhoons were made in 92 and 93 (2500/2200).

So the list of good products to use is:

Sonus Total Eclipse

303 Products

Adam's V.R.T.

Poorboy's Trim Restorer

Meguiar's #38 trim gel

AIO

Looks like i have some research to do! Thanks for all the recommendations. I will probably do some research and then start with the stuff that is easiest to get first.

Thanks everyone!

Neat truck. I detailed a '91 in the same color (looked exactly like that one)....had similar troubles with the cladding, and I only had 303 Protectant and NXT Protectant on me. Applied the 303, thinking it might work better than the NXT, with an MF applicator. It got really splotchy, so I applied some NXT Protectant over it, buffed off, and it looked 20 times better!! The owner said something about car wash "quick" wax he used through his hose or at a car wash facility did something to it and it had looked faded and splotchy ever since.

Hmmm NXT. I didn't think of that. I will have to add that to the list of things to try.

Yeah all of the trucks are the same. They did make 2995 but all were identical being black on black (with the exception if a 55K Marlboro Syclone that they only made 10 of in red). The Typhoons came in different colors though, white, red, green, black, blue with some variances.

Some people have painted the cladding. I imagine to avoid this type of cleaning fiasco. I personally think that if you keep it clean it looks almost as good as if its painted. Just not quite as convenient.

dynmicracr I think the AIO is a good option and if I can find a small bottle I will even send you a small sample to give it a shot. It will clean and protect the plastic so you don't have to worry about dressing it every time water gets near it. I will give the bottle thing a shot today and let you know.

I did a pretty in depth search on the forums here awhile back for something to keep trim like you have on your truck clean & looking good. A familiy member has a truck with basically the same "plastic" trim/cladding and was looking for something to use on it. Poorboys Trim Restorer pretty came up as the most popular for that type of trim when I as looking. Alot of people seem to like it.

Good Luck & Nice truck
