I didn't re-clear the entire bumper, just the top piece above the chrome trim because when I did the work on the passenger side I masked off the other half of the bumper which made a tape line. When I wetsanded the side I did the repair on, I just continued over to the other side and sanded down the tape line so it wasn't raised up. I used 2000 grit wetsand paper on both sides (so the clear would stick) and laid down the 2 coats of clear 10 minutes between each coat. With the clear laid over both sides, the tape line disappeared.



I did all this with Spray bombs.
 
Man, that's *really* impressive, props to you for attempting(and for successfully completing) that repair!!!



My question is: After the black was laid, you said that you sanded it lightly before adding the clear. Did you buff the bare paint (sans clear) to remove the marks before adding the clear?



You should at least offer this service if you do any dealer work. I know there are guys around here that *only* do that sort of thing. You could be a one-stop-shop for the delaers. :D

I can't imagine if you get your self a spray gun :rofl Paint that black I30 to white :grinno:
 
So you would have had to have a tape or blend line on the drivers side of the bumper cover. What did you do to eliminate that? Once again, you have serious talent!
 
Holy SHITake !!! that is an awesome job !! I did the same thing to my GS300 only rubbed it up against a mailbox not a wall and it cost me $350 to have a body shop do EXACTLY what you did. what really pissed me off is that i thought the $350 price they quoted me was to repaint the entire bumper which i was cool with (get rid of some of those gravel pit marks) but turns out they only painted the corner (damaged area) of the bumper.



Gotta say it again........that is truly an awesome job, hats off to you!

To answer your question: No, I didn't buff the bare paint before the clear. The reason why I sanded down the paint is so the clear would stick/bond properly to the paint underneath. If I cleared directly over the paint without sanding, it would chip off slowly over time. If I had cleared it within a half hour after the paint than I wouldn't have had to sand it, but the reason I needed to sand it was to get rid of the tape line on the drivers side, therefore I had to wait until the following day when the paint was hard.



As for doing this for dealers, I think I'll just stick to detailing. The only reason I did this is because it is black and there wasn't any color matching involved. For the most part, black is black... very simple.

What is a spray bomb? I googled it and could not find any pictures.
 
^ i believe spraybomb is slang for repeated use of spray cans.



wow this is great work! i have lots of paint cracking on my front bumper (mostly due to bad bodyshop work) and am thinking i need to do the same thing. i dont really know much about painting.. you started off first by sanding it down via machine correct? then it goes primer, paint, CC?
