HELP!

I'm wondering what is causing the black "stains" or blothces on my 2003 Acura tl-s rims. I've been using what I think may be a acid based cleaner. Would this cause damage to my rims? IF so, how do I reverse it? It looks like mildew stains. Black dots and small areas of black stiff on the inside of my rims.

CAN ANYONE HELP?? please email me right away.

nazcaf,

If you are using an acid base cleaner then that may be your problem. There is no reason to use a acid cleaner more than once, and only if your wheels have baked on brake dust, especially on newer clear coat wheels. The acid is more for chrome wheels.

If the damage is caused by the acid then there is no reversal except to have the wheels stripped and then re-done. You may be better off just getting new wheels. You can have the wheels buffed and polished and this will help the overall look but as the polish wears off the blotches will come back.

Does it appear to be hazy and discolored in the affected areas? Can you see streaks where the wheel cleaner runs down the wheel? If so then what mayhave happened is you applied the wheel cleaner to a hot wheel or allowed it to sit on the wheel too long before rinsing it off.

If you have black dots or splotches on your wheels, it is probably a combination of tar and brake dust.

Which wheel cleaner are you using right now? You may want to try a stronger, non-acid based cleaner. I'm fond of P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner, though EF High-Intensity is highly recommended around here as well.

Also, the new formula of Eagle One A2Z wheel cleaner is supposed to be quite good. The original Eagle One formula was an acid-cleaner; I'm not sure if the new one is. Perhaps someone could chime in on that.
