Best Products and Techniques for Older Paint

sharpie1- Oh how I love that car! I'd much rather have that imperfect old paint than a perfect REpaint any day. To me, after all that time the flaws are "patina".

I agree....

A nice paint cleaner once or twice a year and some wax, just keep the old bird shiny....

Klasse or P21s paintwork cleaner with a decent wax is all that car needs at this point...

P21S carnauba car wax would be a nice combo....

Dave1- I'm not a big fan of the P21s, but on that color it'd look fine. I could flame the durability but I hear that some folks actually like waxing their cars.

The Collinite arrived at about 1:30PM today.

I had already been working on my other (newer) car.

I had already washed and dried it, used clay on it for the first time - actually that was the first time I had ever used clay at all. Then, I applied Klasse All-In-One - and I was getting ready to use the Pinnacle Souveran on it - but since the Collinite just arrived, I decided to give that a try instead.

First, let me say I am absolutely amazed at what a difference using the clay bar made. I am also very impressed with the Collinite 845. It went on easy and was easy to buff as well. I will post some pics here of the finished product.

I didn't get a chance today to begin working on the Mercedes which I originally posted about on this thread - however I plan to work on it in a day or two and will be using the M#7 then the Collinite 845. I will post pics of the final results of that.

Thanks...

I hear ya....And some of those waxes out there are very expensive.....

845 is super for durability but, for me sometimes it's a pain in the ass to remove on darker colors. I prefer sealants, use wax once and a while and P21S is affordable...

I'm a big fan of older, high-quality single stage paint (started this stuff back in the '70s, had Benzes of that vintage myself, still have a Jag of that era). Mike P. and I are always on the same page regarding sticking with the older-tech approaches on older-tech paint.

BUT I'd use Collinite's 476S paste wax instead of the 845. IME it's more compatible with the underlying glazes (e.g., M07, IHG) with less solvent-action than the 845. Lasts much longer too.

Cool, I have a question for you....

Saw the video link of Mike and his takes on SS paint and it was amazing. I don't have any M07 but, I found a bottle of Menzerna Finishing Glaze PO 115C that I bought a while back with some other Menzerna products. I have never used it and was wondering if it is comparable to Megs #7.....?

I have a 1993 Toyota truck with ss paint and have never tried any glazes on it...

Dave1- I *GUESS* is that the Menzerna is "similar but different". The Meguiar's Pure Polishes are kinda special in that they're loaded with the Meguiar's Trade Secret Oils...old-schools stuff that's *great* on/for old-tech single stage (especially the really porous stuff) but not so swell (*IMO*) on more modern paints.

That '93 Toyota's single stage is probably more like b/c than old-tech ss so my *GUESS* (heh heh, notice how I keep emphasizing that!) is that it'd work out pretty well. In fact, I'd probably reach for that instead of a Meguiar's Pure Polish if I were glazing that vehicle.

BTW, I always find comments about 845's durability a little surprising. IME it's not *bad* in that department (was a bit better pre-VOC IMO) but it's not all *that* great compared to even their 476S let alone stuff like FK1000P. Nah, I'm sure not challenging your assertion, just commenting on the YMMV/Y Opinion MV aspect of LSP durabilty.

Sharpie1- Ah, glad the BMW turned out so well. Interesting to hear your take on the 845...Souveran is a genuinely unique wax looks-wise so liking the 845 in its place surprises me a little. But I'm glad to hear it as 845 protects better and lasts a lot longer.

Well the reason the car may look better than ever is because this is the first time it has been clayed. Had I used the Souveran, the results may have been better.

If I washed in in a week then put Souveran over this (on the BMW) would that give me the Souveran finish - or does that only work on a wash then a fresh coat of sealant (such as Klasse AIO)?

Sharpie- Gotta be careful mixing LSPs, somebody here had a Souveran topper mess up their previously-applied Collinite in a bad way. None of us would've expected that in a million years but it happened anyhow.

So if you just can't live without the look of Souveran (and the, uhm...joy..of applying it all the time ;) ) then I'd do the KAIO first to basically start over.

When you did the claying, did your clay show evidence of significant contamination? I'm guess it it must have since you credit that step with how things turned out.
