Best mitt to prevent marring? Sheepskin isn't it.

If you think the grout sponge from home depot is to stiff theres one from another company thats a bit softer and is the same price. I will post the brand and pics of it later.

Thanks SpoiledMan for the idea...I threw out wool mitt and now have a bunch of grout sponge.

With most sponges, that's true. But grout sponges are the exception. They are soooo soft, and they freely release contaminants when rinsed out. I was very hesitant to try a grout sponge for the same reason you are.

But, (believe it or not), SpoiledMan knows what he's talking about.

I prolly better stop teasing him so much, but he's just *such* an easy target. :)

The packages ones are just a bit more stiff and *might* cause a bit of marring on softer paints when used for an ONR style wash *but* I haven't tried them. They work perfect for a traditional wash even on soft paint. They're probably safe to give a go.:)

Oops, didn't see your response before. I would rather have the softer grout sponges if I can get them but I may give the packaged sponges a shot. I'll check my HD one more time to see if they have the ones you use yet. Last time I checked was a couple months ago.

So, has anyone compared the grout sponges to the sea sponges that were mentioned a few months ago??

I've given my opinions before but I'll state it again.

Since trying out grout sponges, I haven't gone back to sea sponges. With sea sponges, you have to rinse them well to release any sand or seashells that my have lodged in it. They are really, really soft with a lot of pores for the grit to go into, but they are way too soft for my taste. They'll work fine on dusty cars, but if you have pollen or anything of that nature on your finish, you'll find yourself applying more pressure to "scrub" it off. I felt really uncomfortable using the amount of pressure required to get pollen off. Also, compared to grout sponges, they probably will not last you as long, although despite being how soft and gentle they are, they hold up pretty well. I only had a small piece of sponge fall off. They're also way more expensive than grout sponges.

Hands down, grout sponges win in my book for regular washes. Like SpoiledMan said, they're $2.XX after tax. You could get 10 of them for the price of one sea sponge. I kind of miss using the sea sponges because even though they're somewhat small, I find their size and shape to be the perfect size for my hands. Unfortunately I deal with cars that are kept outdoors 24/7 so the grout sponges work better for me.

I haven't used my mf mitts in forever. Sponges have the edge when it comes to rinsing ability. Anyone that wants to test this, take a mitt and clean the rubber part of your wiper blade. Take your sponge and do the other wiper blade and then agitate them both in your rinse bucket with the grit guard. Your mitt will still have a slightly dirty line where you wiped the blade whereas the sponge will look clean.

Went to my local HD today, and bought 2 sponges.

They didn't carry the one above, but had one similar....

made by "QEP" : Super Sponge - All purpose Grouting & Clean-Up.

Each of them are individually packed, also had a 6-pack.

They seem soft, looks similar to what SM has....will give it a try today with ONR.

Chris also has ceramic tiles on his lower door panels to reduce swirls..........hence the grout sponge.......LOL

You can't tell some people *ANYTHING*! :chuckle:

IRL, I haven't looked anywhere else. I'm satisfied so I haven't ventured out.

I've been wondering what those circles were on my back.:idea

i have black paint. Are you SURE that these grout sponges won't scratch? Black paint, i always see swirls out of anything. Sometimes when quick detailing, i get swirls. I just freshly polished my paint and was wondering these grout sponges are good. Black is not as forgiving as other colors. Last thing i want is swirls. Should i get the super soft ones or the semi stiff one? Thanks.

Same here superblack. My Bonneville gets very very faint lines from the softest mf's. I actually just got a grout sponge and tried it this afternoon. I couldn't see any difference in the results compared to my sheepskin or Schmitt. I definitely prefer a sponge to a sheepskin for holding suds.

so the grout is good in your opinion? I'm going to take your opinion better since you drive a black car as well and know what i'm going through.

Yes, it seems to be fine, but my car wasn't really dirty enough for me to give my 100% approval to it. My paint is very finicky and seems to marr just by looking at it though, so it's not the best car to evaluate a sponge since the paint isn't in perfect shape. But I did half the hood and trunk with the sponge, and half with my sheepskin and saw no difference afterwards. And just for another test, I also washed my wifes truck (a dark blue) with the sponge next. I just polished the hood a few weeks ago, so it was scratch free, and still looked just as good after the wash (haven't gotten around to polishing the rest yet).

Actually the next time I'm there I'm going to pick up one of the ones with the coarse white backing for the wheels and wheel wells.
