BEST drying towels

Interesting! I had it work out the exact opposite- back when I used the Absorber and other similar products I had the "little bit of water left behind" issue, but I find that my WWs get it all :nixweiss Another of those YMMV things I suppose.

I'm with Accumulator here. WW is only way to go. Shammy's and absorbers have a tendancy to streak, get dirty, are a PITA to use, and have a tendancy to scratch. Buffing-style WWs, while soft, don't absorb well.

How many of them will I need to dry my car?

You can dry your Corolla with one of the Monterey WWs. Just use the hose (minus nozzle) to sheet the water off first. Drying with the WW will be a breeze.

go to k-mart and pick up the gold viking x-large (6 sq.feet) microfiber drying towel, and it's only $8.99! mine's been through several washes and shows no sign of wearing down... :2thumbs:

:2thumbs: Best OTC towel I've used... 2nd would be the Vroom Drying Towel.. sometimes on sale for 6 bucks.

Side note: after quite a few washes.. the silk edge is seperating in about a 1 inch section on my viking towel.. probably from catching it on a hard edge of something. Underneath it appears to be edgeless completely.

I'm old fashioned ... I like using the Absorber. I can dry a panel usually with 1 or 2 passes.

I find it doesn't work as well on cars with finishes that aren't as well maintained. With those I need to go over it a few more times to get it dry.

I had the exact same experience as Accumulator.

No votes for Big Blue or Griots's (granted the Griot's is kinda pricey, but hey it's got pockets for your hands :nervous: ). Both of these towels have served me well, but really my very favorite ww is Pakshak's Ultra-Soft. In fact, I just ordered another one :o.

I bought some super soft (Waffle Weaves Montery) from Patrick at Excel. If you have a mar free finish, these towels will keep your finish that way and not break the bank either at about $10.

I like to initially dry the car with an air blower, so there is not as much water to absorb, thus you do not have to touch the car's paint as much.

I also purschached a Chemicals Guys drying towel for $13-$18 ea. and it is larger and has pockets, but it is not as soft, and if I had a black car or a soft paint, if I was a fanatic I might worry about some minor maring with this particular towel. For me it's oK, it actually obsorbs more water (it's is larger and more aggressive). Would I buy this again, probably not. Does Chemical Guys sell other plush drying towels, ? probably. But I live close to Excel and many autopians recommend their products for their quality and pricing, and you can not beat the service of Patrick. But Paul at Chemical Guys will also treat you well.

Goodluck on your purchase.

(PS There is a difference in the quality among the MF's & merchants. Spend your $ wisely, either research it carefully or just buy 1 or 2 towels from a merchant to make sure you like their quality, price, and service).

I've gotten a lot of use out of my BBTs, but they're not soft enough for my liking on the good cars.

I just got the Pakshak Ultra-Soft and my initial impression is that they aren't as soft as I'd hoped they'd be...I even called Ranney to make sure they sent the right ones! Not bad by any means, and much softer than the BBTs, but not as soft as my gray ones from MicroFiberTech, which are apparently discontinued :(

I'll concur that the excel monterey's are my favorites, but I do wanna mention the Vroom large blue drying MF's at target.. they're $5.50, huge, and very soft - not waffle weave but big enough to make up for it, and cheap to boot.

I like the newer Sonus WW drying towel with the satin edge. It works well.

I do think though that the towels can only pick up so much. If you use the hose to sheet the water off of the surface you shouldn't really have much water to remove. If the water isn't sheeting well you may need to touch up your LSP so more water is removed with the stream of water.

That's interesting..maybe I just found it soft because I'm comparing only against two towels that are definitely a lot coarser--that being BBT and Griot's. I guess everything's relative. Or maybe a case of one towel not being the same as others? :nixweiss

I've never used MicroFiberTech towels before. Are there any towels that you find comparable to the discontinued gray ones?

Accumulator, I believe OCD still has [the super-soft WW]...

If you have a link I'd really appreciate it! Hm.... OCD... unless I'm just having a brain-pause I don't think I'm familiar with them.

Not so far, but I might look into the ones lacaszcpm3 mentioned. Although there's a limit to how many WWs even *I* need to, uhm...accumulate. Three BBTs, several of the gray MFT ones, a few gray ones from the Autopia store (not quite as soft, but very nice), and now three of the Pakshak ones. Gotta admit that I have more than I need by about 300% :o

It's not like I expect any problems from the Pakshak ones...

lucaszcpm3- Thanks for that link.

Yeah, Autopia is OK with the posting of links like that (thank goodness).

No problem, let us know what you think if you order some.

Oh, and if your a member of M3 Forum you get 15% off :).

Heh heh, I'm trying to resist both the purchase of more new MFs and the joining of any more online forums ;)

I bought my E36 M3 as a beater, with the idea of just *using* it and not sweating its detailing...famous last words, I've spent the last few weeks cleaning up the undercarriage as the first step of what looks like a long, involved detailing project :o

But thanks again for the info, and if I *do* get any of those towels I'll post something about how they compare.

I was thinking about ordering the chemicalguys ww but now i'm not sure. I have a red gmc sierra and I use the cobra ww now but I need new ones and I dont wanna pay 20 each. I thought about the excel towel but 9dollar shipping for a single towel kinda turns me away.

Excel refunds what ever money isn't used for shipping via paypal. Besides shipping is just expensive due to gas prices, you can't escape that unfortunatly(sp?).

I posted the original topic and I'm leaning towards Excel as well. You should look at some of their towel packages. I was leaning towards the gold package. It's also nice to hear some good stuff from other autotopians about Excel as well.
