Best cutting compound

I was wondering if it mattered what brand cutting compound i get. I can get some free cutting compound for my PC at work but was wondering if it would be any good? I work at a chevy dealer and i know the products they use in the detail department arnt the best but it seems it would work if i followed with some SSR2.5.

Pro makes some very good products, nothing wrong with them. You should, however, make sure that the compound in question is OK for use with a D/A and not rotary-only. The latter type of compounds will damage a finish if used with a D/A/by hand and the damage often requires a rotary to correct.

I wouldn't use any compound with DA buffer, just not going to work very well. I rarely use a compound as it will destroy a clear coat but when I've done classic restorations I used a 10" wool cutting pad and 3M compound and it did a good job. Personally, the strongest product I use on a DA buffer is a megiars red foam cutting pad and #83. Maybe you are not getting enough cut because you are not using the DA properly, make sure you move very slow and apply a lot of pressure. Also consider wet sanding, a good alternative to using a compound and rotary.

the only compound i like from PRO (BAF) is clear cut and its not too strong imo

also YES it does matter which compound you use depends on what your needing it for!!

I've used SSR3 with a PC and gotten good results so far. Just make sure with heavy compounds to check your work often and not use too high of a speed so that you are not cutting too much into the clearcoat.
