beginner needs help on detailing black car in pretty bad condition

Sounds like you have a whole lot of very fundamental questions. We can provide lots of help, but sounds like you need to do a bit of homework too. Click on the "learn" icon and read David's articles. Also look thru some of the Autopia Member Articles; they're chockful of solid info.
 
There are MF applicators available...But I think the maj of autopians use either cotton or sponge type app's....Its whatever your preference is ! I would say for your particular situation, I would go with cotton...Its slightly more aggressive than the sponge type........
