Beer

I been drinking my usual, alpine and moosehead light. Company owned and Brewed 5 hours down the road :xyxthumbs New Brunswick Canada baby :bounce

Went to the State Liquor store today and to much of my surprise this is what I found:

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot

Celebrator Double Bock (Bought)

Pilsner Urquell (Bought)

Ayinger Jahrhundert

Hoegaarden Belgium White

Piraat Triple Ale

Chimay Grande Reserve Ale

Chimay Red Trappist Ale

They also had some Lambic's, but after reading about them I decided not to put them on my list (too fruity flavored).

John, the lambics are good; different, but good.

On the way home from work I got a case of the Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, and some Lancaster Milk Stout. The LMS is really good, man. Sweet, but not too, and a little "chewy".

I've had the IPA; it's nice and hoppy, and a little spicy.

People should checkout the Microbrew's in there towns/city's. Most of them have some awesome beer to offer.

I live pretty close to the Old Dominion brewery, they have some excellent beers. Unfortunately they have to be kept cold, and most resellers do not do this, so I've gotten a few bad purchases. I can go right to the brewery, but that's not always so convenient.

Tom,

I might try them (Lambics) one day. I got the 60 and 90 Min. IPA's on my list as well.

Well I could not resist, I went back and bought the following:

Ayinger Jahrhundert

Hoegaarden Belgium White

Piraat Triple Ale

Chimay Grande Reserve Ale

Chimay Red Trappist Ale

Also added another to my list:

Samuel Smith's Organically Lager

Are you getting bottles, 6packs, or cases? Here in PA you can get bottles and 6 packs of the good stuff at insane prices ($2-3 bottle, $10-12 a 6) but you have to buy them in a bar... to get a decent deal you have to get a case. The IPA was about $29, the Milk Stout was $22.

So I'm set for the summer, it looks like.

Tom

Bottles, some one of most two of until I get a chance to check them out then I'll at least buy a 6-pack.

I tried the Pilsner Urquell tonight, nice beer, but will not buy it again, I know I can/have bought a better pilsner. Those prices are exactly what I pay here in UT.

Reading all this stuff makes me really thirsty:spit:

I usually drink Carlsberg, Corona or one of many Finnish brands like Lapin Kulta, Koff, Karhu or Olvi.

Good to see some beer appreciation here! Just got back from CT and brought some I'd never had back with me:

-Cantillon Gueuze (a blended lambic, BTW, not all lambics are fruit flavored)

-Ommegang Three Philosophers (a quaddruple) and Hennepin (a saison) (Who knew there are really good belgian beers being brewed in Cooperstown?)

-Unibroue Fin du Monde (it is great, anybody near Montreal should visit the brewery) and Trois Pistoles (bottle broke on the plane...)

-Dogfish head 90 minute IIPA (the 60 minute is not worth buying as there are much better IPAs out there, IMHO)

-Tomas Hooker Liberator (It's a 1 liter bottle and it's brewed in Hartford. I really love Celebrator Dopplebock, so I have high hopes for this beer, which is ranked higher on http://beeradvocate.com/top_beers.php and I'm moving to Hartford in 2 weeks, so it might become a regular. I'll let you know)

John- Pilsner Urquell can be very enjoyable or very repulsive, depending on how it was stored. As it is a green bottle, it is very susceptible to "skunking". Skunking occurs when light hits some of the compounds in hops, causing them to undergo a very unfavorable chemical reaction. Never buy a beer in a green bottle unless it has been stored out of the light. That's right, Heinekin is NOT supposed to taste like that!

Just as a warning for those contemplating trying the Arrogant *******: If you aren't used to really hoppy (i.e., bitter) beers, try a milder pale ale first, otherwise it will be a real waste.

I must say, yall drink some odd beer...or maybe I am stuck in a box. Where do yall get these exotic beers at? Here in texas I havnt even seen or heard of the stuff yall are listing.

Try this:

http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/city/31/

Edit: this is a list of a lot of the breweries, brewpubs, beer stores, etc. in the DFW area.

It takes a while to get into the stranger beers; I'd recomend starting with some more intermediate beers like:

-an american pale ale (sierra nevada is a good one, and commonly available)

-a brown ale (newcastle, same reasons)

-a wheat (boulevard, same reasons)

If you like what you are tasting, there are 1000s of other beers waiting to try!

Only downside is that you might become a beer snob, but I keep this in check with a monthly High-Life bender!!

Sorry folks, Im domestic. Its either an ice cold Coors or Bud for me......and thats only if Im out of wine!

Yeah, I have this really wierd thing where I like to taste what I am drinking... :D

Anyways, I also homebrew so I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to beer. I recently switched to all-grain brewing (I grind and mash the grain instead of using extracts) and am loving it!

Ben Z,

Great to hear your opinions. The Urquell was very drinkable, but I think I can do better with the other stuff on my list to try.

jjwalker,

Try your liquor store, I'm sure they have some imports.

well, I have had some import beers, and I like alot, but these exotic ones, I havent heard of. The weirdest beer I ever tried was "fat tire" and man, was it aweful!

Fat Tyre, I want to check some out. This one lady I work with likes it and I want to trade her for some Pilsner Urquell.

my favorite is bass ale.

if that's not on sale, then sam adams light.

if not that, then kirin ichiban.

i've had this orion beer from okinawa. not bad.
