Backing Plates or Velcro Boots for Cyclo?

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a Cyclo. I know about the velcro boots for the machine, but I was wondering if folks are using the small backing plates instead of the boots. Will the small backing plate that threads on the PC work on the Cyclo? Is there any advantage to using the backing plates instead of the velcro boots?

As I don't want to get both, any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, the 3.5" plates for the PC fit and work with the Cyclo. I, persoanlly, use the boots just because that is what I installed when I first got the machine and left them on there. I boots also keep the machine further away from the car, which I like. You can also use the edge adapters and the Edge/Cyclo 4" pads.

You can not avoid not getting boots as they come with Cyclo (at least they did when I purchased it). I have tried Cyclo with 3.5" PC backing plates. If you are not in the rush I will be trying it with 4" rotary backing plates sometimes in next few weeks before I make final decision and then I will post my findings.

I use the 3.5" backing plates. I bought them from Danase, no less!

I'm happy with them because of the slightly lower profile than the boots.

I like to remove plates with pads still attached, so I'm getting a collection of the 3.5"ers. I do know that I could easily remove a plate and pad combo from the Cyclo, put it on a PC to do an odd spot, then put it right back on the Cyclo with just the flip of the wrench.

Quality is great on the ones I've bought from Danase.

I use the edge system with my Cyclo. I used the boots but will never go back now. The machine runs so much smoother.

I'm looking at one without the boots, so I would need to get either the boots or the plates.

I'm using them with Propel 4" pads.

Those look good for the price. The fact that they're a set of 2 is a bonus as well. I do have a 3.5" backing plate from Excel. I could always just get another, but the price of 1 is nearly the price of those two.

Any other comments on the advantages of one over the other?

If you're starting from scratch IMO you *REALLY* oughta go with the Edge system. I'm debating switching to it even though I have literally dozens of velcro-backed 4" pads. IMO it's *that* superior for this application.

toml,

The thing I like about the Rightlook backing plates is the fact that there is no "overhang" of the pad, the plate goes all the way out to the edge of my Propel 4" pads. I've found this to allow more pressure over the entire pad, which I like during paint correction. There is a bit more danger of the backing plate hitting another part of the car, but I've never had a problem, as long as I have watched what I was doing.

Care to go into detail..[about why you'd go Edge]?

While velcro-backed pads for the Cyclo were a *huge* improvement over the previous pad-attachment system (ask old-time Cyclo users, the original system was a *REAL* PIA), they're still not all *that* user-friendly. Getting the pads centered can be more of a hassle than one might expect; I keep telling myself "I don't have the sort of problems that others complain about so hey, no biggie"... but it's still a long way from being as easy as it could be and I'm getting tired of it.

And when people like ScottWax rave about how the Edge system/pads make the Cyclo that much more user-friendly, well....that's enough for me!

CycloToolmakers' ready endorsement of this system (they even sell it as "official Cyclo") speaks volumes too. This is simply a better mousetrap IMO.

Thanks, Accumulator. I'll keep it in mind. I already have a pair of Propel 4" blues, greens, and oranges for spot polishing with my PC, so I'd have to get all new pads too if I went with the Edge system. Not sure I want to do that, especially on a machine that I've never used.

Also, I've seen just enough posts on this forum about the Edge connection system failing to be hesitant to go that route. To top that off, there was the thread about Menzerna SIP and difficulty with Edge pads. Hmmm ...
