BACKING PLATES & COUNTER WEIGHTS

Can anybody tell me what size backing plate and counter weight I need? pc 7424 I have read where a person says a 4 3/4 backing plate with a 6" pad works best so you dont scratch the car he says. but then I have read about using a 6" counter weight with a 6" pad is the best way to go? Do you use the 6" counter weight for the 6" back plate or are you concerned with the size of the pad and the counter weight? I really dont understand why pc doesnt give you the propper items when you purchase the pc itself. I am planning on using the 6" foam pads with my pc if that helps I just want to buy what I need so I need some help please. I dont need this pc vibrating anymore than it needs to be. thanks :dontgetit :beer_smil
 
I haven't used backing plates except on my rotary but I changed that also. would suggest going with the edge 2k adapter with the edge pads.. but that's just me..

It almost sounds like you are confusing the backing plate with the counter weight.
The Velcro backing plate, as you probably know, is for holding the Velcro pad in place. I happen to use a 5" backing plate with 6.5" pads for just the reason you mentioned plus, you have more tolerance for centering the pad.
My PC has a counter weight for a 6" pad, but several people use the counter weight for a 5" pad and don't seem to notice excess vibration.
One thing I might mention, the PC will vibrate because of the motion it travels.
This will show you the counter weight. It is located on the rotating shaft you screw the backing plate on to.
This will show you a backing plate. (It happens to be a 6", but the 5" looks the same.

I prefer to match the CW with the same size BP.......In my opinion and experience, any pad 6.5" or greater should utilize a 6" BP and CW (provided the pads backing material extends beyone the BP). As you load your pad with product, the weight obviously increases, and your CW should be able to compensate for that.

With the Meg's 6.5" pads I have, I don't think there would be enough Velcro for a 6" backing plate. There isn't a lot of extra Velcro even with the 5" plate. My original Meg's 6.5" pads and 5" backing plate came from Meguiar's as a set back in 2002. Things could be totally different now. The 6" counterweight came with my 7336 PC.

I have just read to many oppinions perhaps , but I do feel that if I purchased the 5"backing plate it would be best to use the 6 1/2" pads. But do i need the 5" or 6" counter weight or wont it matter? What counter weight comes with the 7424 also? From what i have read and kinda of agree with you should have about an 1 1/2 difference between your backing plate and your pad . thanks for all the advice guys.

Weigh your options.......As for right and wrong well, I guess its best left up to the user. I currently use a 6" BP, on 6.5 inches of backing material, (That leaves only 1/4" maximum perimeter material outside the BP) on a 7" pad............I just prefer the perimeter torque better with the 6" bp. I also believe theres less stress on the pad if you have ample backing plate.

Are you using the Propel Pads you sell? Doesn't sound like it. I thought they required a 5 inch plate to fit into the recessed back on the pad?
 
I use the six inch backing plate for my PC. Use it for all the pads that I have. I use LC, Propel, and Propel2 pads.

have yet updated my PC 7424 to the six inch counter weight. There most likely would be vibration reduction if I did.

Thanks for your help. I just wrote it kinda confusing I do know the diff I just am trying to figure out about the size of backing plate and the 5" or 6" counter weight. I think I will go with the 5" bp and the 6" or 6 1/2 " pad but still not sure what cw to go with or if one even comes with my 7424 it does not say even on the pc web site. thanks though guys.. :gathering

Your 7424 probably has the 5" CW. It should be marked on the CW. A 6" would probably cost less than $5. You could get the 6", try them both and let us know which you prefer.
And we don't have to spend any money to find out. :D

I have a PC 7336 with a 6" counter weight and 6" backing plate, and I also have a PC 7424 with a 5" counter weight and 5" backing plate. Me using Megs pads you cant tell the difference between the 2 at any opm. These are my personal opinions. TO me it doesnt matter it will feel the same. I believe you can only tell the difference if you were to use it for sanding but I dont use mine for that.

OK guys thanks , that helps alot . So I should get a counter weight with my 7424 thats cool. I am going with the 5" bp and 6 1/2"pads from lake county mfg.If I feel the need to try the 6" cw I will let you know what I think.. Now its time to figure out my polishes and waxes lol which I have a better idea on so thanks alot everyone.
