Baby got new shoes

PA DETAILER

DETAILED TODAY?
Well the Firestone destinations were wearing a bit thin. So got Hankook Dynapro AT/M`s this morning. $50 rebate and got them nitro filled for free. Just a short trip in them so far. Impressive. Hated buying them but when you get down to it, that is the most important part on your vehicle and the only thing between you and the road. Plus had the time to get it done.

PA DETAILER- Ah, sounds like you really like `em! What prompted you to get those specific tires?

I just got another set of Michelins for the Tahoe, haven`t broken them in enough to say whether they`re as good as the last set and I might run these at crappy-handling-low-psi so they last a lot longer (we`ll see if I can stand that).

Tires can be like a wax or sealant, very subjective. It varies upon what attributes are most important to you. Glad you like the new tires. Nothing worse than spending that kind of money and wishing you had picked something different.

Does your Xterra ride and drive better now?

I`m about to buy some new tires for the van, it`s first replacement set, at 58K miles. I believe I`m going with Continental Control Contact Tour A/S Pluses at Discount Tire. They have about $150 of rebates that`d apply to me.

Does the nitro really make any difference? Had a car salesman talking that stuff during a test drive once and I just rolled my eyes...

Don`t they always when you get new tires? Tricks you into thinking you got a new ride. LOL. Only made a bunny hop in them so far, but yea, night and day difference!

Might have to look into these, the General Grabber AT2`s are getting a little noisy (sounds like a bro-truck) on the truck. Shame as they have tons of tread, but are more of a mud tire and less for snow. Those Dynapro`s look like a happy combo of both.

Since it was free. No harm done for sure. On a track where tires get super hot I think there is a thin advantage. For street cars and truck I’m not so sure. I’ll start out by telling you all I’m no engineer or scientist. But the air we breathe is 78% nitrogen. The reading I’ve done suggests that it is beneficial only in the most grueling circumstances. It’s a profit maker usually for the Dealer.

I was pitched this by the service writer at my dealer for a few bucks a tire. I asked my mechanic at the dealer who I have a great relationship with. He said what nitrogen is really good for is the dealers bottom line (read wallet). Unless you are tracking it heavily. The extra 22 percent Nitrogen makes a negligible difference and it’s hard to find if you need a refill. Since it was free it certainly won’t hurt.

Let us know your real world findings.

Sometimes the Nitrogen has solved (very) slow leakdown issues for me, but mainly I stick with regular air as I adjust my tire pressures for different uses/conditions. No way am I gonna keep a tank of Nitrogen sitting around...
