If you tinker with your car and you don't have an OBDII scan tool, now is your chance to own a decent one for about twenty bucks.

Amazon.com: Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN OBD-II Scan Tool: Automotive

I have had one of these for over a year and its a great unit to keep in the car or in your toolbox. It has worked with any car I've connected it to which includes German and American cars. It also shows emissions readiness if your state inspection checks those. Very handy to have.

on german cars does it read all the codes or just the government mandated emission stuff?

I think its just the generic codes, I can't recall having one that was manufacturer specific. I know VW/Audi have gone completely over to the standard codes, even in their manuals.

i know on my audi that ross tech can read all the codes, but most the aftermarket type can't read. the aftermarket ones only read the emission related ones at least on the older vw/audi.

Yeah, I have a HEX+CAN myself, however if you look in Elsawin, all the codes in the diagnostic section are the generic codes P codes. That said, I don't think its exactly fair to compare a $20 tool that doesn't require a laptop to a $350+laptop type tool.
