Paint Thickness Gauge Rental

Whadia think? Say, $20 for 1 week? If we had to - pay for the whole thing then return it, get (price - $20) back.

:autopia:

I don't know about $20. But I think its a great idea. Especially if you can rent the PosiTector 200 that would read individual layers and their thicknesses.

Ray, how is my trade in program coming along???

What Brand and Model Gauge ?

The most expensive one is over $2,000..

Could do something similar to Autozone... Pay a deposit of almost what it is worth up front, then receive a portion upon return of tool.

Brand and model(s) up to whomever buys them (PBMG). I'd like to see a lower end and a better model available.

I really have no idea what rental fee would make sense. I just wanted to get the idea started.

Postage should be $6 for Priority Small Flat Rate box. A few bucks for handling. $8. Plus the rental fee.

You know in the forty years I have been doing paint rejuvenation, I NEVER needed a paint thickness gauge....get in there do the car, take the money and move to the next one. I guess I just not getting it. I don't measure paint I polish it, rejuvenate it, perfect it, make it almost bullet proof and smooth even kissable says one of my female clients. WHO cares about how thick it is! I polish PRIMER if that all that is there. If I may suggest this as a waste of US dollars, lets be objective here. Be well!

Well for those of us that don't have 40 years of experience, a tool that helps with the process can be helpful.

I am with you on this one. But I do see the advantages, especially when wet sanding. Other than that. I would rarely use one.

Its not as big of a deal if you know the history of the cars that you are working on. I deal with a lot of vehicles that I don't know the paint history. If their have been a number of previous corrections or repairs the paint may be getting dangerously thin. The only way to know that is to be able to actually measure it over several locations.

I consider it a must if I am going to be wet sanding. I also like to use it when I am trying to correct deeper defects or rids. It lets me know just how far that I can correct without getting myself into trouble. I consider it cheap insurance for my business .

I'm comming at this as a non-pro - just like detailing my cars and family. The gauge would let me know what my starting point was. Compare to other cars like mine - see if I'm getting dangerous on a corner or some panel. I'm the third owner, maybe somone used Bottle Of Rocks every Saturday?
