Autopians,



I want to have some contests for product give aways. I have tons of stuff. Please share your vote or ideas on contest types. All judging will be via the membership.

I like the photo contests. I joined after the first one took place and have always wondered why there hasn't been another. With the summer months coming up, it seems like the perfect time to bring it back. I like the idea of just "detail pictures" rather than "reflection pictures" seeing as it's more open to everyone (don't just need a black car) and lends itself well to creative shots.
 
Going to be rough competing with all these pro detailers :o



Definitly need to have different categories based on skill :up



Maybe make out some more quizes, those are always fun! Top scores win!
 
Reflection pics would work for me.

I think it would be good to have those quiz type contests, so that it would be more equal opportunity for detailers with who are not as advanced, and also for people without a good camera. For instance, looking for details in your ebook, or designing new logos, etc.
 
I'd like to see each of those. I do believe that there needs to be two classes for dark cars and light cars in the detailing contest and reflection contest. A white car isn't going to hold a candle to some black 2003 model BMW in the shade or something. I think more consideration needs to be taken in that area. I understand that if your car can't compete then it shouldn't be entered, but that can't mean that all white and silver and yellow cars have to sit there and get their butts kicked in reflection contests.
 
Maybe a section for 'Newer' cars and 'Older' cars. It's amazing to see a good vintage paintjob 30+ years old with a mirror reflection.



oh and for the quizes, plenty of chemistry questions ;) I'm taking organic this summer
 
I just thought of a good type of contest. Everyone is always saying how it's technique and not product that gives a great finish, and how they could get nearly the same results with turtle wax. How about a detail picture contest where there is a cash limit on products used, and there is a stipulation like "has to be available at local walmart/autozone". I guess this would only concern painted parts of the car, and would suppose a swirl free finish. So basically just glaze and wax. Cheap and a pretty fun challenge.

Yeah, but how could you prove the work was actually done without posted 600 meg videos?
 
That's why I suggested that one of the comments be a best 'how-to'. If technique is king, then let's hear the best techniques.
 
I guess you'd just have to rely on the honesty of the participants. Maybe it sounds a little naive but it seems that this board attracts decent people who would see it as a challenge rather than an opportunity cheat david out of some prizes.
 
I think if you have a best detailed car contest there should be two rules...The car has to be at least 10 years old and should be a daily driver !!....a monkey could detail a nice new 2003 year model car thats a showroom queen but it takes some skill to detail something thats been around the block.
 
How about a drawing where you would give away smaller items to random members....(encouraging more new members)..then have a real contest for detailing with pictures...still haven't figured out how we're going to judge that though.

Perhaps we could start small local events...nothing big, but partially sponsored by the sponsors of this site. We don't need a major event, but more localized little events where maybe 20-30 detailers could get together outside major cities and have a few little gifts for members. What better way to spread the word about great detailing?
 
The key here is to make it easy on me... I'm still working 3 full-time jobs... so it has to be easy for now.

I think like 5 categories of picture contests would be great.

Best Overall

Best Overall Light Color

Best Overall Dark Color

Best Reflection

Best Older Car (10 years or older)



Or something like this.
 
If you do photo contests, I like the ideas others have suggested, of separating them into light- vs. dark-colored cars or newer vs. older.



My one concern: Apparently there are ways to Photochop pix so they look great. I've taken some pix of my cars in very filthy condition, but something about the light and exposure makes them look magnificent. What real value are photos as "documentation" vs. photo-artistry? (Hmmmm .... expecting flames on that one.)



BTW, if you have a "Fun Pic" contest, Jngr's recent one with the reallyreally big truck will win hands down!



And for the health and sanity of Autopia, I would strongly urge the contest for "Best Detailing How-to" articles. We really need more stickies or member articles on the basics. (Thinking here of RCG's recent thread about the need to use search engine; more stickies or articles might make it easier to answer questions by pointing to a specific page in Autopia.) You could do product-specific (3M SMR, Menzerna, Klasse, etc.) or process-specific (washing, interior cloth, exterior trim, polish, etc., etc.) articles; downside would be that there could be about a zillion categories.
 
How about the " count the number of jelly beans in the jar " contest!

David, you use your photo skills to best display the big jar, and we each get one crack at guessing it's contents.



It's fair for everyone,with different detailing skill levels and photograph abilities ( some people don't even have a digital camera), and best of all it might just be fun.
