Automatic transmission

Do what I did... go back to MT :)

Once a year ATF change sounds overkill.

Anyone done a complete fluid change all at once? (tranny, diff, oil, brake, etc) Did it feel significantly different?

I wish I could go back to manual transmission. It would have been my first choice. But, the used Volvo I could afford didn't have manual transmission. :sosad

i hate going from manual to auto. im so used to manual now in my civic that i hate driving an auto just cause i like to control my own gears instead of the computer operating them!!!!

I agree, with smaller engines the loss of power with an automatic is not worth the convenience. I can not conceive driving my past owned VW Beetle, Rx-7, Tr-6, or 3 series BMW with an automatic trans.

But with a hi-power and hi-torque V8 there is no perceived loss of performance. There is a loss of some of the fun factor of driving.:xyxthumbs

Actually, I like the extra control of standard transmission. I also like the way one becomes attuned to the car. I have noticed that people with standard transmissions tend to drive better in some ways. E.g.: they seem to choose the best cornering speeds. It has to do with always having part of your awareness on the performance of the car - the way it sounds and feels.

On the other hand, I'm not so fond of stopping on hills in a standard (e.g. traffic lights).

Well Taxlady, with a little time, money and patience you could do a few choice upgrades to your Volvo and be cornering like a pro. The percieved loss of power with the smaller engine will be a thing of the past for you and that auto tranny won't seem so bad at all. On the other hand, the 850 T5, T5R and R variants of the car were\are all available in Canada with a manual transmission for all of the model years so those cars are probably available over time. They would have to be imported into the US, in order to get one with a stick. Only starting in 1998 as the S\V 70 was the manual transmission available in the US.

oh i don't mind hills when driving, its not even a big deal. Plus the fact is that i saved about 800 bucks by buying a manual civic ex than an auto(i woulda been dissappointed with an auto).

I don't mind hills when I'm driving; I mind hills when I'm stopping (red light at the top of the hill sorta thing). ;)

Before we got the Volvo we were thinking of buying a new Corolla. That would have been Cdn$1000 (plus taxes) less and what I would prefer.

This reminds me of something: I think some Subarus have this really cool "hill holder" feature that uses the brakes (I think) to keep the vehicle from moving on inclines until you take off. :)

Yeah, I mind hills when stopped - especially when I'm in San Francisco. Some of those hills in the northern part of the city are just scary even in a automatic with some decent power. I can't imagine how people with stickshift get around in that place. The lights aren't synchronized and if anyone else has my luck, I usually end up stopping behind a delivery truck and in front of someone riding my bumper.

It's probably just my worrying personality that makes me feel that the car will start to roll back becasue I don't think an automatic can really do that, but I just don't want to find out
