Hello all :wavey
I tried the Autoglym HD wax for the first time this weekend, so I thought I'd throw a few pennies in. I tend to get a bit long-winded, so bear with me if you can
I put it on my daily, a silver 300C. Important to note that the surface was *far* from ideal. My prep work consisted of an ONR wash, so...yea. Not even a clay job, as I plan on doing a full detail in February--time permitting, as always.
On the 300C, my usual regimen has been 845 as a base, topped (more frequently than I care to admit) with PS. To be honest, as much as I love PS, to my eyes the difference on a light colored car (which is all that's around currently) is pretty much negligible compared to just 845. My hope with AG HD was to find an LSP that was easy to use and would really make the silver pop.
The results? So far, so great. The application process made me a bit weary--the wax just didn't seem to be applying smoothly. I love the applicator itself, but I just couldn't get a smooth coat unless I used slightly more than I know I should. In any event, I'm chalking it up to user error. Back to the applicator--for sure, it will make you painfully aware of any surface imperfections. The old plastic bag trick could easily be replaced the AG HD applicator one :wink1: Although I knew going in that the car needed to by clayed, using the AG applicator actually made me feel guilty for not doing so.
Removal, on the other hand, was a breeze. Even the slightly heavier areas wiped right off with little effort. The finished product looks great--nice, deep reflections. What really impressed me was how it looked on the trim. Both the black plastic and the "chrome" brightwork look sensational. The mirror caps on the 300C are a great litmus test for streaks, and the AG HD wiped right off. Is it the slickest finish out there? No, it's not (even considering my shoddy prep). The finish isn't zero-friction FMJ smooth, and I'll be curious to see how well the famous Vegas dust (and soon, pollen) clean up.
Durability, of course, I can't speak to. Although to be honest, given the frequency with which I top my daily, it's not much of a concern. Neither can I comment on how well it cleans up and sheds grime, which on the other hand is *very* important to me.
Bottom line: is it worth a purchase? An almost completely unqualified "yes." IMO, it's the perfect look for a silver vehicle. Just gives a great "pop" to the paint. On dark colored vehicles, I like that deep, "lost in the abyss" finish. Very curious to see how this wax will look on a black vehicle. I have a feeling it will be too mirror-like for my tastes, but time will certainly tell and I'll be happy to be wrong.
If you can still find that infamous 20 dollar Wally World deal, I'd say it's a no-brainer. For the more common price of 40 dollars (which is what I paid), I still say it's a good pick up if you're looking to try something new. Collinite 845 is still--by a wide margin--my favorite OTC wax/sealant. Given the price, looks, ease of use and durability, it's tough to beat. NXT 2.0 is still very good on light colored cars and great on a dark vehicle. It's far too early for me to fairly rate AG HD with these products, but we're off to a good start :thumb:
