Are we obsessed with water beading?

I just did a quick search on water beads and surface tension and found an interesting article. It doesn't deal directly with car wax, but the science is there. Pretty technical and complicated, but should be a good read for the propeller heads around here! ;)

The science of water beads....

If you can get through this article, then you clearly ARE OBSESSED with this topic!

Hehe, hi floni :D Well, I think DK and <span style='font-size: 12px;'>STEVE are still going to go at it right now with the chemistry aspects of this stuff, and everyone will get all annoyed before we come to any conclusion and it will be like the Bumper Scratches thread:rolleyes:.

But I think either one would be good for you. Personally, as long as I know the protection is still there (the main reason for this debate, IMO), I'd love sheeting! Much less drying time as you wished for in the other thread. But DK is concerned that his paint may not be as protected as it is sheeting. Correct?

So as long as you know the protection is there, it's personal preference. I love the look of beading but prefer the lower maintenance of sheeting. I must say I feel like my paint is better protected with beading though.

what happened with steve's name there in your post....its like 5 times bigger than capital letters..hehehe....im wit ya there...like so much of it all..personal preference...the scince is interesting though...to a point...:D

Honestly I looked at the beading in the pics and I would think they would be rounder that that from Zaino. I'll have to check the roundness of mine again to see too. When my digcam comes in, I'll take some pics too.

The wonderful beading on YoSteve's Passat is from his Souveran, not the Klasse, I think. I still get beading with Klasse, but not as much as a nice oily wax will give you.

puterbum, Soveran was like a month ago

so not only do have Klasse that beads, but I have souveran that last's over a month, you guys really need to move here :)

(remember AIO beading on windows from april, no wax on windows ever)

i made some very simplistic points, let's not let it get out of hand

Flomeister loves ya...and im pretty much agreeing with what your saying.....but how come your not saying what the after effects are(of not enough sheeting)...seriously i trust what you say...id like to know.....

BTW...the way you said to move there...i dont know ahy but it reminded me of that show:"land of the lost"...with the Sleezacks....rememeber that show...:p the time that weather forgot..hehe

Call the firetrucks this thread is on fire!

Question for all.

How do you know if you have paint protection if you cannot use beading?

I me slick don't cut it with me. I could clay a car and it would feel slick to me.

I LOVE BEADS.

Big purple, green and gold ones.

Great thread, huh? Lots of action and no flaming. A true Autopian dialog. Lack of insults does not mean we cannot have interesting exchanges of ideas. Some people think its either flame wars or boredom. It's not an "either/or" choice -- there is a third way. All the views and opinions we want, without personal remarks. Well done, everyone!

Now, back to the topic (sort of). I have a WeatherShield car cover. It is a very thin material. The maker claims that silicon is "micro-encapsulated" into the material <em class='bbc'>during[/i] the manufacturing process. All I can say is that you would not believe what happens when water gets on the material. It practically stands up! I mean, in most places the beads mount HIGHER than a round hemisphere (unfortunately, for reasons I do not understand, the water prints through in places).

<strong class='bbc'>I used my old AIO applicator to apply Klasse on the glass in April. (APRIL!) and what does my window do now, bead! No QD on the window no nothing. [/b]</blockquote>
d00d,

That's pretty impressive. What's your window detailing regimen? Wipe with damp MT and follow with dry MT?

Thanks.

i checked a bunch of different sites and they talk about the encapsulaiotn...very interesting...its actually in the fibers..like you were saying...imagine it...not like a layer of water repellency...the fibers "are' the repellent....it also says that water will"sheet"off as soon as it hits the cover...really amazing...is it as light as they make it out to be in the ads??

also...stve...so your saying that you didnt "apply" Klasee to the window in the traditonal sense....you finished klasseing your car...then used "that"applicator to apply whatever Klasse was left on the applicator to the windshield...thats pretty damn amazing as Inter said...i dont have anyZ on my windows....just never did it..i know DK does.....get that digicam already buddy!!!;)

FLONI -- yes, it is as light. It's the thickness of a light, unlined nylon windbreaker . . . a thin one. And, yes, I believe that the silicon IS incorporated in during the making. BUT, my cover, at least, lets some water in. Its a shame. Their tech support people say it should not be happening. They gave me a remedy. So far, no cure. But, where it is repelling, you have never seen anything like it.

Yeah, when you're doing applying the AIO, wet the applicator pretty well and scrub down all your windows, then use the mt you used for getting off the AIO haze.

Last time I did this was in April, and my window cleaning regimen consists of just taking the mitt and scrubbing the window with my wash mitt and drying with a separate mt.

AIO on windows definately beads for a long time, try it :)

yo...Steve, after you use AIO on the windows, is there a reason that you don't use SG after that? Are less Klasse layers on the glass better? Thanks.

For me, the windows are already 3 times as shiny and reflective as my silver paint will ever be. So I don't feel the need to go the extra step. Many use SG on windows, but I feel they don't need any more protection and shine than they already have. I mainly use AIO for it's beading, and you will find that it works great; beads like Rain-X but with less streaking.

But I see in some older cars that windows get cruddy after awhile, so using SG may definately prevent that, so it might be advantageous to go the extra step and use SG.
