Are garage responsible ?

Got my Alfa 156 back today from the garage after a service.

I asked them not to wash it, but they went and did it anyway.

I now have micro-marring noticeable under halogen lights. And about half a dozen hairline scratches, noticeable under sunlight.

Would I be within my rights to ask the garage to pay to have the car professionnally buffed. I actually wrote on the workcard that I don't want the car washed, so I have proof of that at least.

thx

Go back to the garage and raise hell, I would not let them detail it though. Just try and get a check for the value of a professional buffing and then do the work yourself.

Good idea. But am not competent with a buffer yet.

Still..could always do it by hand.

Is 3M SMR ok to use by hand. I heard it's a little difficult, and Meguairs #9 2.0 is more effective ?

thx

Either SMR or Meguiars #9 will work. Depending on how bad the marks are it may take several applications by hand though.

You should go back to the garage and give them a chance to fix the problems. Give them a copy of your instructions not to clean. If they cannot or will not fix the problem you need to go elsewhere and send them the bill. If they refuse to pay, you will need to go to the small claims court.

Ring around your local legal firms, many do the first session free of charge, just to make sure your going in the right direction. The garage damaged your car, but you do need to give them the chance to fix it, in the same way as if they had broken a headlight. Oh yes, dont forget to write a long letter to Alfa Romeo and any professional bodies that the garage belongs to, if you have no luck.

I must respectfully disagree. Fool me once, shame on you- fool me twice, shame on me. If they can't wash the car properly, I'd not give them the chance to really screw it up with a buffer.

$0.02,

Well I went back to them today. The service manager apologised. Didn't even look for the work order, once I showed him the scratches on the bonnet.

The garage also own a body shop which has a very good reputation. He's organised for me to drop the car in next Tuesday to have it buffed. He also waived the charge on the Alfa mudflaps the garage put on. (about $120). Can't get fairer then that I guess.
