Applying meguiars #16 paste wax w/ a PC

I was wondering how to properly use paste wax with a porter cable. I was watching the Meguiars video: Power Polishing Clinic. In the video he first applied the wax with a foam wax applicator and then he applied the wax to the PC pad using the wax applicator.

After the wax is applied to the PC pad, how do I apply it to the vehicle. Do I smear the wax while the porter cable is off and after that turn the porter cable to 2.5 or do I just turn the porter cable on without smearing the wax?

What speed do you guys suggest using while applying wax and removing wax (MF bonnet)?

I just did that yesterday, using Meguiar's #16 on a PC D/A. It may or may not be the best or recommended way, but it worked for me. I used the 9006 finishing pad on the PC. I used the back of a plastic spoon to scrape up some of the #16, and put five dabs onto the pad in the 5 pattern on dice. I laid it on the surface on the car and turned it on at 2-2.5 speed. I spread it out quite thin, that much was able to cover about 2/3s of the hood. It only took 10 minutes to set up, I checked by using the "swipe test" (quickly swipe the surface of the car with your index finger, and check if it wiped clean). As I do not have a MF bonnet with the 7006, I just used a clean terry cloth to buff it clean.

This is my second time using #16. The first time around, I didn't apply with a PC, but by hand. Even thought I tried to spread it out as thinly as possibly, I couldn't lay it as thin as the PC. It was MUCH easier to buff off after applying it with the PC than it was when I applied by hand.

I hope that helps.

I also use a plastic utensil to scrape some #16 onto the pad. Usually I manage to get so much on it that I have enough to do half my truck before I need to get more.

Brazo- Yeah, that's another great thing about applying it via Cyclo ;)

For the 6.5" pads, I too use a tool. Either a plastic razor blade or a rubber bladed spatula. I do try to distribute the wax evenly on the pad and rub it in a little when first starting out, I prefer not to touch the panels with a "bare pad", even a finishing one.

Oh, and I've found that with the thin, even application I get with a machine, I can do the whole vehicle before I start buffing it off, no problems at all.

Nah, not stupid at all! They're not exactly commonplace.

I got mine from AUTOINT . I've seen them a few more places recently, and somebody....who was it ...maybe Lee Valley or Garrett Wade also had some slightly bigger than normal ones that'd be great for this. Sorry, no links handy, but those companies have *scads* of great stuff so they're worth doing a search on anyhow.

One method I've used for paste wax is to actually cut the wax block out of the tin with a knife ,

and holding the block with a microfiber cloth , run the wax over the pad gently , then apply to vehicle.

Nice , thin , even application.

But that's just me........ :nixweiss
