Apple

Waiting to see some. This is not some leftist plot. It is also a key republican point too. I do not think Apple should do it automatically either but not going to blame it on a political side. This is a national security issue.

No, it's a rights issue. Stop posing it under the vail under national security, thats exactly what happened with the patriot act that you love to site under gwb.

Also, if you don''t have the fore site to see that a judgement like this sets a precedent for the government your more ignorant then most would think. I have cited all facts here and yet you say, you don't see any. That alone shows how you have zero basis to make any claims or rebuts for your belief in whats safe for all of us. SAD.

Do you under stand the concept of coding and encryption?

Once a backdoor and or solution is generated, it can be replicated (Digital footprint if you will). You can bet your last cent that as soon as the government gets that phone after being unlocked (which they will). They WILL replicate the process, an you really think they will just use it for one phone. Thats like an elementary school bully saying if you give me your lunch, no more wedgies with his fingers crossed behind his back. An we all know how great the government is at keeping sensitive information out of the public hands right... oh yea the clinton administration can definitely attest to that.

The government gets hacked all the time, do you really think I want the Chinese number one to target for digital espionage to hold the key to my personal info from banking to my personal contacts.... you'e got to be smoking something.

I myself wonder if it's *really* true that the NSA can't crack it. Just because that's the official like in this particular case, well...that doesn't convince me that it's necessarily true.

And kinda similarly, I'd question whether this specific instance can reasonably be considered to involve "must see" intel (in case the [agencies] *can't* already crack it).

But then, I for one *never* assume that any electronic/online/telephone info is truly private. Never. I honestly believe it's naive to think so. Payphone calls to a burner cell might almost be reasonably considered private, if ya feel lucky and destroy the cell after one (brief) call.

I would say the most secure are either private networks Ie sat phone networks owned in foreign countries or the second option is Silent circles Blackphone, the NSA HATES those things.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the NSA can't hack it. Our government agencies absolutely love to say they're way more amazing than they are.

I also don't think it's a liberal vs. Conservative issue at its heart. The problem is that so many people choose to self-label themselves as one or the other and blindly follow their chosen peers. It's a people problem. Just because they said it on TV doesn't mean it's the complete truth. If people could stop with the party vs. party and be more willing to compromise we may get a few more things done as a country. Look at the bright side if you consider yourself as conservative, American leftists as still far right of a lot of country's conservatives.

Also, since everyone likes to talk about how Bush started The Patriot Act, I would like to point out that Obama reauthorized it in 2011.

Can't Apple just tell them what was on that Terrorist's phone and then let it go ???

What if there is a network of people like these 2 and they talked shop on their Iphones all the time?

Wouldn't we want to know where they are, so we can stop them from doing more damage ?

Now that Terrorists with Apple phones know that they will never get hacked by anyone, is this really a good thing for us... for the world?

Unfortunately it's a slippery slope, the problem is between governments and hackers they've forced apple and other os builders to build stuff that is virtually impenetrable. Why? number one is banking, millions bank online and I'm sure even with the slightest flaw apple may be open to suits from people who have been hacked.

I'm pretty sure they can't even get in, what they are proposing is this. To essentially build an alternate operating system with a backdoor and then access that phones iCloud account via the new os via the backdoor program.

Apple like, the FBI, doesn't have the key to access that data so no, Apple can't just tell them what was on the iPhone.

The iPhone running IOS9 uses 256bit AES encryption whose key is tied into the passcode. The passcode is now not just a 4 digit numerical but defaults to a longer alpha/numeric string and this passcode is used to develop an encryption key. After 10 failed passcode attempts, the phone is erased.

Apple is not the only player using AES encryption. It is, in fact, in use on several smartphones as well as some 50+ standalone encryption programs. Brute force hacking the 256bit AES key could take years on a supercomputer which is why the NAS has chosen it for the standard for top secret documents. Since the iPhone will erase the data after 10 failed attempts, likely a limit that has already been breached, this game is probably over.

The fact that the terrorists destroyed their personal smartphones and not this county owned iPhone, makes it clear that there was nothing of importance on the iPhone.

I suspect this full court press by the FBI and Justice is nothing but an attempt to get a backdoor into these devices. For better or worse, this battle took place back in the early 90's and we now have this thing called encryption to keep our data and financials secure.
