Anyone work from home here?

So the boss lady just asked me if I was interested in WFH (work from home) and I really am not but I am in the mood for a change and I`d like to spend less on gas and eating out every day so I`m gonna take it.
So it looks like in April I will be no longer making a 60 mile roundtrip commute every day!

Also she says I am up for a new schedule here by May probably, which would be Monday through Friday (so no more 6am wake up to be at work at 7 am)

Anyways just curious who works from home here and if you have any advice to give me?

with 30 mins of break and 60 mins of lunch per day I might even be able to knock out a quick wash/wax on my lunch break! hahah

I work from home 2 days a week. My core business hours are 9:30 to 5 but we usually always work 9 to 10 hour days maybe more depending on projects.

So its nice to have the option and it saves on gas and wear and tear on the car too!

I do find wfh i tend to work more. Less distractions at times from people at work.

Advice: have a quiet space without distractions. I.e. family distractions where you can focus.

I have two spare bedrooms but I have to hard line into my router and that`s in my bedroom - but there is ample space to put a desk and make a little office in there and a nice window to my backyard so I think I`m gonna just clear up some space in my bedroom

Honestly I`m more excited about getting a M-F schedule soon but I was going to apply for WFH after that, and they told me I could get WFH in April so I told her she better not be joking w/me. :)

I have done both and almost think it`s better to go to an office. Home is good for a while and gives you some you time even at work, but human interaction is very important in a world of people walking around with buds in their ears and faces looking down into phones

I agree and I may give it a shot over the summer and end up coming back to the office but I am pretty social away from work so I don`t really need work to have social interaction.

I did it occasionally if we were extremely busy and I got authorized to get ahead on projects and work from home over the weekend and I loved it. You get a lot more done and it is less stressful since you don`t have annoying co workers chit chatting all day (happens a lot in office environments) . I used to purposely take a weekday off, and come to work on Saturday instead so that I could have total silence while doing all my paperwork.

Not much advice to give since you`ll be going into a much better situation. As already said, it is easier to get distracted while at home so setup a workspace that is more isolated. I`d get distracted because I was temped to take more breaks and relax more since I was in the comfort of Home. Only downside is maybe not being able to address any urgent situations as quickly since you can`t just walk up to a co-worker/manager to take care of things and everything will be remotely instead but that wouldn`t be a deal breaker for me and not for many if their job involves a lot of remote stuff anyways.

I agree. The balance of wfh and office is nice and I like getting out of the house.

Ive had projects working with overseas clients thats purely work from home and after a while working like that you go stir crazy especially when you have to work their hours. I was on a project with a Hong Kong based company for 6 months and that was brutal lol.

Used to work from home a lot; didn`t have self-discipline to turn it off so ended up moving jobs along in middle of night when they really didn`t need to and other stuff that interfered with acceptable work-life balance.

That was back in the corporate IT days, where there was ALWAYS something that was better done in middle of night (in my mind anyway). Again, my lack of self discipline.

Working from home blurred the line as to when the day ended.

Now, barring the occasional e-mail, work and home remain separate.

I havent had the chance outside of "sidejobs" to WFH... I feel like there can be an advantage for me since I am a night person, I cant seem to get things done quick enough during the day.

my girlfriends mother works from home 2-3 days out of her 5 day work week. she likes it. she has a room that really isn`t used much where she does her computer work and conference calls and things like that. then she also gets dinner cooking and goes in the basement during her 60 min lunch to workout. its a pretty sweet deal really, as long as you can be disciplined to get work done and don`t need the interaction with coworkers, which based on your previous post you say you don`t. id be excited.

$7/day for food on avg (eating out) x5 days a week = 35 x 4 weeks + 140
I tank a gas of week in my car/truck = 50 or maybe less (I never really fill up from empty) x4 = 200
so that`s 340/month...200 i`m saving for sure from not driving to work every day, not to mention the at least one hour of time to and from work every day

and I actually do enjoy cooking so I could easily cook fresh meals AND have time to piddle around on my 60 min lunch break

the way I see it I can give this a shot all summer and save the gas money at least and reinvest that $ into fixing up my garage

the important thing there is just socking away that money that you would be spending and putting it into a separate account so you actually have that money sitting there waiting for you when you`re ready for it!
and no doubt on the eating out.. I throw in 6 chicken breasts in the crock pot and that gets me thru about half the week. less than 20 dollar for 12 breasts at the local wholesale club, cant go wrong

I work from home one day week. Fridays. I absolutely love it.

My advice...especially since you`ll be doing it five days a week...spend the money and get a nice comfortable office chair. I`m not kidding. I tried siting on one of my dining room chairs for eight hours one day and my back was absolutely killing me.

I think the feedback of the crowd is great. I have never worked from home, but I am a very driven individual and work really hard all the time.
The best action I carry out outside of a "work" environment is write your 10 goals every day, and make time to pursue them. If you can list out tasks, set what you need to do and do it. That 60 min lunch detail could turn into 2 hours... or more... easy

from what I have learned from your posts and detailing work, you have a great work ethic already and will continue to do well in all you do! Keep us posted

I`ve done it and for the most part liked it. That said, disipline is probably the most important factor in being successful. It`s the type of thing where you can`t stop for a bathroom break and then decide to stop by the fridge to make a sandwich, then stop to pet the dog and then step outside for a breath of fresh air. You still need to get a days work in. It`s also very important to know when the work day is over. You can easily make a 40 hour work week a 60 hour work week if you can`t step away from it. Going into the office for team meetings and a chance to see the boss is also important. You want them to remember who you are come time for a raise or promotion.
