Anyone using Ubuntu?

I am currently working in the telecommunication devices sector, and that qualifies me as an IT professional to some degree. I am on the administrative and financial side of the industry; I speak with an unbiased point of view. I work with both Ubuntu (running the servers) and Windows for my audit work.

Here's what I think about Ubuntu. If the reason for you to switch to Ubuntu is simply because that Windows is giving you a hard time, then I guarantee you Ubuntu is not the solution. Quite contrary, you will have an even harder time with Ubuntu. If you cannot even tame Windows to the way you like it, then you will not be able to tame Ubuntu.

I know I will get flamed for this, but Ubuntu users who are not professional developers or programmers, and always bash Windows are simply elitists. I use all sorts of OS for work and there is not a shadow of doubt that Windows is simply the most versatile OS there is. Ubuntu's real value lies in that it could do all sorts of things in the hands of an intermediate or advanced users. To a person who is simply looking for an alternative to Windows, Ubuntu is mostly essentially useless. Many new Ubuntu users switch back to Windows after a few hours of using it.

Although Ubuntu is backed by a resourceful community, which could be of tremendous value for the development of silicon chips, new hardware devices, and software writing, Ubuntu is essentially meaningless to endusers who are simply looking to surf the internet, play some 3D games, and download pirated movies through media sharing.

Finally, most of the crashes that occur to Windows are a result of poor drivers or unstable firmware in the hardware. To say that Windows is unstable is just like making a stereotypical racist generalization.

All I know is that all of my forums have been hosted on a server using Ubuntu and they never have a problem and my buddy using it on his home PC has not had a reboot in months. I have to reboot Windows daily. If Ubuntu is more stable on my PC and gives me less headaches that's all I care about at this time. LOL

Wow, you use Ubuntu for business/commercial server use? Not exactly the distro I'd expect, most shops are on some less bleeding edge stuff.

Don't recall if I have posted in this thread. I have Ubuntu for my HTPC, Laptop, Network Attached Storage, lastly have Debian on my router. Had used Ubuntu on my web server but cut back to a more secure less updated distro.

Ubuntu does release a new version of the Desktop and Server editions on a 6 month cycle but they also have an LTS (Long Term Support) version which is on a 2 year cycle and would probably be more appropriate for production environments.

The next LTS version of Ubuntu is due April of this year.

So far so good. Got it installed today and had a little trouble with my video card but it's all good. I'm just now getting a few minutes to play around with it.

Cool, if nothing else, its a free new toy to play with. I'm really curious to see what you think at the 1 week and 3 month mark. Keep us updated.

Day 4 on Ubuntu and so far so good. I'll never pay for Windows again. LOL I did have a problem last night printing something off a pdf which was weird. I had 4 pdf files to print and for some reason one would not print. I ended up having to print it on our laptop. LOL

Couple weeks in on Ubuntu. Runs much smoother than my Windows did. Only real complaint is that FireFox sucks on it. It's just super slow. I guess that is a common complaint though. No big deal because I use Chrome mostly and this weekend I'm going to give Opera a try. I had an issue trying to print a pdf, it printed like 10 perfectly but for some reason on would not print. I love the updates. They install so fast and you usually don't have to reboot for them. But so far no real complaints. It's been running non stop with on restart last night to try and fix the firefox issue.

I LOVE opera. There are so many cool features but my favorite is Opera link. Once you have it setup, all you bookmarks are available on all of your computers and even your phone. The notes feature is super cool too.

I'll have to check it out more. It's been years since I used Opera and I never really used it much back then. I'm going to read up on it's features and stuff when I have time.
