Anyone use MF's to apply wax/polish?

I was just thinking about trying this today, and I was wondering if anyone else does this. I wouldn't see what would be wrong with it.

I do all my detailing by hand. And i cant imagine detailing with anything besides MFs. I would never use terry applicators after i had been exposed to MFs. I dont see why Wax/polish would be any different than anything else applied by MFs.

A week or so ago I cut one of my older 16x16 MF towels into four 8 squares to use as applicators and liked them so much that yesterday I cut another one into squares. Better feel than using a pad.

I'm still waiting for my Zaino order to come in that has the cotton applicators that I normally use, so for now I'm just using the MF's, but they seem to be working pretty well.

i thought u needed the foam pad to kinda "cut" when you polish? So if you used a MF there would be no "cutting" action..?
Along the same lines (but opposite ;)) I think people like Scott suggest using a nice folded terry towel for more "cut". Foam is gentler I believe, but people use that for polishing too. I wonder how much of it has to do with the material it's made of and how much of it is the way it's constructed (terry)? :nixweiss

For wax I'd be more inclined to use foam since I would feel bad about getting all that wax trapped in the fibers and wasting some of it too.

I just bought my first few MF's and used them first to wash & dry my explorer, then I used some to wax & buff the wax off, the MF's make removing the wax so much easier.

Hey y’all - - instead of following in the footsteps of others, how ‘bout trying each type of applicator and making your own choice based on the results that you get?

Gather up the following: two each terry, foam, and microfiber applicators, two MF towels, your favorite wax, your favorite polish, an obsession light (200W-300W handheld work light), and your wife’s (girl friend’s, neighbor’s) black car. Pick a test area on the car an closely inspect the surface for micro-marring from various angles using the obsession light, then apply each product using moderate pressure and each type of applicator. Wipe off the products and re-inspect the test areas with the obsession light. All of this sounds like a lot of trouble, but it will take less than 45 minutes and when finished you’ll know which applicator best suits your needs..

I’ve done the above comparing and here’s what I’ve found: When applying wax/sealant or very mild polish (P21S GEPC or Meg’s #7) foam introduces a fair amount of swirls, terry causes somewhat fewer swirls, and microfiber little or no swirls. When using a harsher polish (Meg’s #2, etc.) a pad gives a more even pressure than a cloth and foam increases the cutting power. For working on individual scratches in a small area cotton balls introduce no swirls, use minimal products, and are inexpensive. YMMV!

After about 1/2 my can of S100 was gone, I was getting annoyed at trying to get already-too-large round applicators down in the mouth of the can (and I'm not very fond of the chunk of grey sponge they include for an app - too small for my hammy fists). So, I took a MF towel and folded it in half, then rolled it tightly into a short cylinder that was small enough to fit into the container. I then used masking tape wrapped several times around the cylinder to keep it from unrolling.

It actually worked pretty well for applying the S100 . . . made it easy to get down into the can. However, the tape was a pain-in-the-backside to remove from the towel; I really didn't expect the tape to adhere that well to the MF. Next time, I'll roll up a MF towel and bind it with butcher's twine to avoid the adhesive issues.

To be honest, I prefer using foam as an applicator for S100, but this trick worked well for getting down into the bottom of the container.

P.S. Here's a stupid thought . . . why doesn't someone market a carnuba paste wax in a twist-up applicator, sort of like stick deodorant, or lipstick?
