Anyone tried using Klasse SG without AIO?

What happens when you paint wood without a primer?



What happens when you paint metal without a primer?



You might get lucky and the paint will last a while and may even look good for a time, but chances are you end up with paint failure very quickly and a mess that must be removed before you can do anything else.
 
What I mean is, can't I use something like #80 with a light polishing pad or WG paint cleaner instead? I don't want to keep buying more stuff but I need winter protection.
 
AIO is REQUIRED, because it is more than just a base for SG. It is also a chemical paint cleaner and it will remove EVERYTHING under which it is applied to - wax, sealants, fillers, oils, itself. SG will only adhere to AIO, itself, UPP, SONUS Acrylic Spritz and maybe a couple of others, but I don't use those.



Look at it this way. AIO and SG have been around since the sixties or seventies. For some auto finish product to last that long in a cut-throat market, it just stands to reason that is does what it claims. Get the AIO and use your SG afterwards. You will have a lot of searching and expsense to find something even marginally better.
 
I wouldn't say AIO is required, but if no AIO, you need to make very sure you have bare paint (use an IPA or Prep-solve wipedown to remove polishing oils, fillers, etc.). I think it was DavidB that mentioned that AIO and Klasse were NOT designed as a system originally, but they work very well together. Klasse will bond just fine to clean/bare paint, or to "compatible" products (AIO, Acrylic Spritz, Acrylic Glanz, etc.).



Seriously, though, if you're going to bite the bullet on Klasse, go ahead and pick up some AIO, too. It's a great base not only for Klasse, but for a lot of other waxes/sealants as well. Diluted with water and used in a spray bottle it makes an excellent household cleaner (mirrors, glass, countertops, stovetops, etc.). It's cleaning ability makes it great for wheels. AIO is just all-'round good stuff to have on hand, IMO.

It works just fine directly applied.



AIO is an all in one product (hence the name). Cleaners and such, as well as some of the same ingredients as SG, just not as much. If you've got the surface properly prepped, there's no reason not to go directly to SG. In fact, getting away from the cleaners in AIO may be a good idea.

I believe that #80 would probably leave too many oils for SG to bond well. I'm not so sure about WG. You can use something like Poorboys or FPII and it will work or do a ISA wipe down with other polishes, but going through that much trouble you minus will just use AIO.

I tried it over 2.5 and it was a bear to remove. I would keep it to using a KNOWN oil/filler free product under SG as you don't need any help making it hard to remove.

:nixweiss Jesstzn used #80/SG on a '67 Camaro and said it worked out just fine.
 
guys, what about a brand new car? AIO required before SG? and is the 24hr timeframe between SG coats strictly to be abided by?
 
I've used SG without AIO, durability seems to be compromised a bit, but to say it doesn't work is just wrong. Also try the 3 parts water to 1 part SG spray on method, its pretty great.

IMO the 24 hour thing is a convenient rule-of-thumb. I never worry about being a few hours early and I've never noticed any sign of that causing issues, but I wouldn't try to do several coats in one day or anything like that.
