Anyone hear of "CrystalGuard"?

A BMW friend claims it is the latest, greatest thing from Japan.

He posted this to prove how great it is: http://ns2.namaeserver.com/~wi6/CGZ8/

it looks awesome - but as far as I'm concerned proves nothing, YET. Here is my response to him (on the BMW board.)

It looks great. But you're drawing a conclusion with no data! Please understand, I'm not saying this stuff does or doesn't work. But the pictures prove only one things: Z8Tako's Z8 just had a detail job, and the other car didn't.

It is possible to remove swirls and put a shiny coat on a car with a lot of products. It DOES take some skill, but it is indeed possible. It is another thing entirely to say this product is unique in that ability, or that it somehow prevents swirls from occurring in the first place.

I'm still very interested, and very hopeful - just very skeptical (as usual. ) Believe me, nothing would excite me more than to be proven wrong!

I would love to know more about this stuff, though. Anyone have any data?

Yes - he found a similar car and parked next to it! So they aren't "before and after", just "with and without" - which, in all fairness, is what he said. He has claimed (on the M5 board) "crystal coating creates glass layer on the car, which is much better looking and much stronger."

I am very skeptical, but he is thinking of importing the product - which I think is why he is being cagey about revealing more details. I am trying to help him avoid being burned - but he isn't paying much attention to me.

Yeah, I just realized now that it was in fact two different cars, was going through it too fast. An incredible product if it does in fact work. Keep us updated.

He also responded with the following, just now:

1. It's gonna be sold as CrystalGuard in US this month.

2. Absolute hardness 72, 6.5 on Mohs hardness scale. 2H pencil can not scratch. 130% brightness with 20 degree speclar test compared to brand new car. No oxidation. You can even coat your wheels and brake dusts don't stick. etc... That's all I know for now.

3. 4, I BUFFED IT MYSELF WITH COMPOUND LAST WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used the finest comound not to f@ck up my paint. No professional detailers involved!! I took Thu and Fri off just for this.... I also applied the coating myself in front of my house. I drove my Z8 back and forth, in and out around 10 times or so, just to check if it's ok under the sun........... and my drive way is covered with compound

This product doesn't fill or remove scratches. I removed scratches then I applied CrystalGuard. Otherwise, you seal the scratches and never can remove them. I made sure I have no swirls under sunlight, then I sealed it. After that, I took it to bucket car wash 4 times everyday in the morning and went to shopping today There's no maintenance. NO WAX. I just take it to bucket car wash. I even told them not to use any soap. Just water and towel.

Sounds like it's another "Never wax your car again" claim. He seems to think it works. But is this really a good thing, if in fact this stuff actually works? I mean from a professional detailers standpoint...it would essentially put a damper on a lot of business. Especially if it's easy to apply, and half-way cheap.

I must admit to being unimpressed with what I've seen of this product. The only example is on the vehicle of someone hoping to solely distribute it in this country - not necessarily the most impartial of opinions.

Photos of any freshly-applied wax or sealant aren't very helpful either as they all look great.

I'd like to see some independent, peer-review assessment done weeks and months after application of this miracle product (then, I'll decide what to do with my Zaino and Klasse).

Just my $0.02 here ...

??? what's the big deal? Any autopian can do that with a PC, some SMR and some klasse?

Exactly. "We're Here" is saying the same thing too. And that's why I responded to him as I have been. You'll see all my comments are respectful, but skeptical nevertheless. Comparing a poorly maintained finish to a freshly buffed-out and waxed one doesn't prove anything about this product.

On the other hand it does appear to have a deep glassy look - and he saysy he buffed out all the swirls himself before application. I don't really know this guy - only from the boards - so I dont know what kind of skills he has - but he obviously did a pretty good job. So - I'm going to stay tuned and watch with interest. Perhaps I'll try some myself in the fall.

It does, but keep in mind that that's a $130,000 BMW. If they don't put killer paint on it, I don't know who would! Let's see how it looks on someone's older Chevy :).

My thoughts exactly...:p

This product sounds interesting. I agree that the product needs further testing, by peer group, or laboratory over a period of time.

I did find this product while searching Japanese websites. The description sounds like crystal guard.

Soft99 Fusso Coat

One more thing about Japanese waxes and sealants, they seem to be formulated for light and dark colored cars.

Let's just hope it is not as permanent as the old Blue Coral Touchless Acrylic Sealant. That was impossible to remove.

If you do a search on CrystalGuard on the net, it comes up as a coating for laminate flooring and is trademarked.
