Anybody here into drag racing?

You are from Chicago? We used to watch cars race on Doty back in the day. I remember once, when I was a youth, thinking I was hot stuff in my brother's Trans Am. I raced a 5.0 that pulled its front wheels off the ground and burned me by like 15 car lengths, by second gear.

i grew up in Aurora but spent alot of time at Doty and Stoney Island rd.

Wayne's World.

Doty used to be insane, I haven't been their in 10 years (or more) but I can remember watching some of the craziest people race out there and witnessed more than a few scary moments when people didn't want to pay for whatever reason.

oh yea. those were some CRAZY times. seen ALOT of bad things happen when people dont wanna pay up. i can remember these guys on a bike were running their mouths about wanting to race. next thing i know this short bus pulls up that was gutted and nice gxsr is pulled out. and this real little women( i mean she was like 4'8" and maybe 75lbs) comes running out in all leather well she gave them like 5 bikes and ended up winning by 3. lol

also seen some good ole country boys from Tennesee come up with at the time a brand new 2002 vette that was gutted and stuffed with a twin turbo viper motor. they spent all weekend up here and walked away with last i knew about $20g

Back in the mid to late 70's I used to live for drag racing.... I spent many a Sunday at New England Dragway in Epping New Hampshire...

New England Dragway - Epping, NH

I used to race there and just thinking about it brings back some very fond memories. Sometime I need to go back and just watch....:yay

I have a picture or two of my Plymouth Cuda that I'll dig up and scan in....:bigups

Nothing like the smell of Nitro Methane in the morning.....smells like victory!! :bigups

Cool I went there 3-4 time each summer in 69-71. My brother-in-law had a 1966 Barracuda Wheelstander that he ran at any tracks close to Montreal. We lived in Magog Quebec then and we were only just over 3 hours away from that track. Our home track was Sanair International in Granby Quebec.

OK, I dug out one of the few I have and scanned it in.... Probably an antique to many here but it was pretty quick for the times....11:02 @ 129mph

Thats still a decent time, can you imagine what that car could be worth unmolested today?

Todd - I was at Gainesville the same day. A little breezy and cool but the cars were enjoying the cool air. I have been there 4 times in the past 7 years. My parents live in the area and I try to visit during the the Nationals. That qualification run in Pro Bike, Eddie Kraweic was unreal, 6.75. Blew me away! It was a fun time indeed!

Originally from Chicago also. I know about Doty Road and Stony Island quite well. Also know about Archer, Lake Shore Drive, I-57, I-94, SW Highway and Elston.

  • Had 2 neighbors who ran Pro Stockers at US 30 back in the day

  • One neighbor tuned these cars and would run them on the street by my parents home

  • Been to Great Lakes multiple times (Was there in 2005 when this happened: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F-JXs0P6Qg]Corvette c5 z06 blows up - YouTube[/ame])

  • Went to Route 66 when it opened in 1998 and saw the inaugural Route 66 Nationals.

  • Have been involved in a few highway/street races

  • Been to Firebird Raceway 4 out of 5 years to catch the big boys. My wife is totally hooked.

I used to run at York US30 Dragway in Pa here in the early 70's with my GS. My cousin and I used to grudge race a lot down there. Alas its since closed, like many other dragstrips, but it still brings back memories.

Last time I was at the Christmas tree was in 2003 at Cecil County Dragstrip in Maryland!!!

I haven't been to the track in years. I use to go every week and would run my old Dodge Ram for fun every now and then. I kept up with an STI wagon once. He beat me at the top end of the track but i wasn't even a car length behind. It was the perfect run in that truck. Later that night I raced a crew can Chevy dually and he left me behind like I was standing still.

I ran the Trans Am a lot and would do the muscle car challenge with a car club. I would spin through second so my times weren't what they should have been. I would always sandbag in to a slower class and let up at the end to keep within my dial in time. A few times I was right on the dot. I never went back after the suspension was fixed up. I bet it would hook up great now.
