Not to be a downer here but ...
Many times people don't know how to start a conversation so they will say something that we view as stupid when all they are trying to do is show an interest in what we are doing.
In their opinion they might just be trying to "break the ice"
In the past I always tried to have a smart comeback for everything that was said to me ... I have realized over the years that my comebacks were hurting many well meaning people.
Just my opinion!

I have had this happen to me on a number of occassions (not just cleaning my car, but mowing the lawn, painting, etc.). I ended up making some good aquantences (sp?) and, at least, had some interesting conversations in almost every case.

I've never been a big fan of the 'snappy' (sometimes rude) comeback. If you can't say something nice, blah, blah, blah. If someone has to be a jerk, let it be the other guy.

A guy said it to me this weekend "do mine next?" I responded - "if the price is right"

he stopped and asked me "how much.." I thought about it and told him "50 bucks for a hand wash and wax, depending on the condition of your paint it can go as high as 200.." hehe he said "the car wash down the street is 5 bucks...thanks anyways.." ahhhh the uninformed.

I get this all the time, thats normaly my response if i'm in a good mood. Sometimes i can be quite the smartass if i've had a rough day. Either way it shuts them up.
