Comet Holmes is visible to the naked eye for those star gazers (such as myself). When I was a kid, I was enthralled (still am) with the heavens. i worked hard and saved up and bought myself a Celestron Comet Catcher 5" reflector, and a plethora of eye pieces.

I use to live in a neighborhood with little street lighting and a large backyard. Panning the night sky was such a soothing thing. Then I grew up, got married, moved to a condo with a ton of HPS lights. Sold the CC for a couple hundred shortly thereafter. But not before I tracked down Halleys Comet, in the mid 80's, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity (I think once for me), for me and the remaining siblings at home, as well as my parents. Here I am some 20 years after its last sighting, still as tickled pink to see this recently discovered "asteroid on fire". Hopefull the skies will clear up for me and my daughter to "run to the hills" away from town. We doo this twice annually for the meteor showers also.

Some additional info for those interested.........

I share the same passion for astronomy. I have a Celestron NextStar4 that I go out with sometimes. The light pollution in my area, and also all the development, does not make for a good star gazing night. I invested in the light pollution filters and they helped a little bit.

How, Iam currently shopping for a new star gazer. I did track down Hollmes the other night with my daughter and some quality binocs, pretty amazing! Visible until late December I believe.

If I take a twenty minute drive I can have a little more darkness so that I can see. I will have to make it a point to go check out Hollmes . I really want to get back to using my equipment. It is just collecting dust now. I went gung-ho when I fell in love with it. I got a Celestron Go-To Refractor (NextStar 114), but I was never really able to use it unless I was in a field. I also got the NextStar4 and a Canon Digital Rebel, so that I could start taking pictures of the sky. Now I take more pictures of my daughter than of the sky. Funny how life changes.

I hope that I can find the time again soon, because I really miss it. It is very relaxing.

Is it possible to see without a star gazer? I guess I am asking if it is possible to see the comet with naked eye.

I remember seeing Halley's comet. I will never forget even though it was only for like 10secs since I was busy.:getdown

SD, if your in a remote area, you can. My daughter and i detected it first in its general location, then zoomed in on it with binoculars. If you go to the first post, theres a link for its location.

Due East of Cassiopia.
