Ants!!!!!

an old friend said he wasn't sure if these little critters were ants or termites or whatever. He caught some in a jar and brought them into work. He showed them to the office expert and the guy said " man, you got termites, what are you doing about them" he answered " I step on everyone I see"

They have a nest somewhere. The queen rules the nest. The ones you see are going out to get food for the ants that stay in and keep the queen happy. They like moist areas for the nest. Youi need to address that or they will keep coming back. The ant baits are the best way to do it. Try to watch them for awhile. They follow the same path to and from the nest. Place the bait along the path. The spray chemicals mask the path so they don't know where to go. It also kills them. That doesn't do much because there are hundreds left. The baits are effective because the ants take the food back to feed everyone else. You don't want them to die until they feed the ants in the nest the poison. Kill the queen and they will move on.

Thanks Vincent. I have learned that there may be a few "nests" under the house and around the house. Being that they are "Argentine" ants there's likely MORE than one queen per nest and that each nest will number in the 100's of thousands!

I don't understand what's meant by "ant trail". What is it? How do you I see it?

The ants at my place just seem to wander about aimlessly. I cannot tell where they are going or where they have been...Heck, I can't tell where they're entering the house.

The is no ant conga line for me to follow.

Grab your favorite beverage and watch them for a while. It is actually very interesting what they do. I have seen them lugging around stuff twice their size. They like strawberry jelly with boric acid. Not too much boric acid, you want them to live long enough to feed everyone back at the nest. Boric acid is available at the pharmacy.

Weird scene with the ants this morning. I did a power dose of Diazanon Ultra a few weeks ago and put down the Terro liquid traps. I've been seeing far fewer ants over the past 2 weeks. I was hoping my ant scene was winding down. No such luck...

I go downstairs this morning to find these significant piles of ants in three locations on the tile floor in the front hall. :soscared: Somewhat surprised to see this...they looked dead and were absolutely motionless. These piles were probably 50 -100 ants all in one tight space. I grabbed the vacuum to suck them up and realized they were not dead at all. When are these buggers gonna disappear

I suck them all up and grab a few stragglers over the next 1/2 hour. I went down the basement to grab a screwdriver and found the same scene there....several significant piles of motionless ants. I vacuumed them up and noticed a few dropping from the ceiling insulation. I pulled the insulation down and a bunch fell out and I found larvae (??) in the insulation. This appeared to be their home. This area is directly below the area where I found all the ants on the tile floor this morning.

I got the insulation out of the house and cleaned up a few more loners. These ants are medium size, black on each end with a red center section. Anyone else see this type of ant this year?

Sounds like they may be carpenter ants. I have found they will nest almost anywhere, but they have to have moisture. Sounds like you might have a leak or some area near that insulation where moisture is being trapped. The "piles" may have been dying ants...they didn't run away when you started to vacuum?

Tom,

I have had what seems to be success with my ant problem!:D I ordered some stuff from https://www.pestcontrolsupplies.com/ and sprayed yesterday. By the time the sun went down last night there wasn't an ant in sight anywhere inside the house. Please remember that I sprayed outside and under my raised foundation home and have seen the effects this fast which to me is remarkable. They also have ant "identification" to help you along.

Yeah, I was looking on-line and they do resemble the carpenter ant.

Did they run? Sort of...some were kind of staggering around like drunks. Hard to say what the deal was...I was a little freaked out by the scene (1st thing in the morning) and the sheer number.

Thanks for your comments. Which product did you order from those folks??

I think the problem I have is that the ants are inside the house, not out. I have been treating the outdoors, along the foundation, door stoops, etc.

I'm reluctant to go nutz indoors...I've put down the ant bait traps (small metal cans) in previous years. Didn't seem to have any impact on the ants.

Give them a call and tell them what you have. They were MORE than happy to help me out. The prices may seem a little high compared to what you find locally but this stuff seems to actually work. I got Termidor spray concentrate and Advance bait crumbs.

I wrote to the nice folks at Terro and he said:

Tom,

These may be carpenter ants....

The piles of live ants you describe is either a mating group of ants attempting to reproduce or a result of all of the treatments and the ants are stressed to the point that they are regrouping.

You found a primary source in the ceiling so treat this area extensively and use the baits to monitor inside and out.

Stew

I'm thinkin' I dealt a major blow to the ants yesterday :woot: there are dead ants everywhere today

I just came across this article from the Idaho Observer. Fascinating idea!

*Aspartame - The World's Best Ant Poison*

From the June 2006 Idaho Observer:

contributed by Jan Jensen of WELLthy Choices

We live in the woods and carpenter ants are a huge problem. We have spent thousands of dollars with Orkin and on ant poisons trying to keep them under control but nothing has helped.

So when I read somewhere that aspartame (Nutrasweet) was actually developed as an ant poison and only changed to being considered non-poisonous after it was realized that a lot more money could be made on it as a sweetener than as an ant poison, I decided to give it a try.

I opened two packets of aspartame sweetener, and dumped one in a corner of each of our bathrooms. That was about 2 years ago and I have not seen any carpenter ants for about 9 to 12 months. It works better than the most deadly poisons I have tried. Any time they show up again, I simply dump another package of Nutrasweet in a corner, and they will be gone for a year or so again. Since posting this information I have had many people tell me of their success solving ant problems with this substance, when nothing else worked.

We found later that *small black ants* would not eat the aspartame. It was determined that if you mixed it with apple juice, they would quickly take it back to the nest, and all would be dead within 24 hours, usually. I have found that sometimes it will kill them, and sometimes it does not. Not sure why, may be slightly different species of ants or something.

Fire Ants: We got our first fire ant hill about 2 weeks ago. Poison did not work. We tried aspartame and the ants ignored it until we got a light rain. It was just a sprinkle, enough to moisten the Nutrasweet and ground, but not enough to wash it away. They went crazy, hundreds of them grabbing it and taking it back into the mound. When I checked the mound 2 days later, there was no sign of the fire ants. I even dug the mound up some, and still saw none of them.

How does it Work: Aspartame is a neuropoison. It most likely kills the ants by interfering with their nervous system. It could be direct, like stopping their heart, or something more subtle like killing their sense of taste so they can't figure out what is eatable, or smell, so they can't follow their trails, or misidentify their colonies members, so they start fighting each other. Not sure what causes them to end up dying, just know that for many species of ants it will kill them quickly and effectively. As with any poison I recommend wearing gloves and washing any skin areas that come in contact with this poison, and avoid getting it in your mouth, despite anything the labeling may indicate. I suspect it will work for other insects such as yellow jackets as well, but have not tested that yet.

More information on this fantastic poison can be found at:

I just laid out some Terro for my little Argentine friends a couple of hours ago. Wow, they are swarming to that stuff. Two words my insect friends: Die now.

My mother used Terro year ago, but I've had some trouble finding it around here lately. Just gotta figure out where to look. For now, I guess I'll just use Nutrasweet.
