Hi all,



After reading this site for a few weeks, I'm starting to get hooked in car detailing. Great forum! :xyxthumbs



Since my family got a few older cars, I found Zaino which I used for my 1yr old car, to be insufficient to make them look "nice". I've then got myself a PC. Using my collection of car products (GT88 scratch remover?, Meguires swirl remover/paint cleaner/polish), I've been able to significantly reduce scratch and swirl marks on one door of an older car (haven't tried the rest of the car yet); but I'm quite scared that I messed something up. :p



From browsing thru this site, it seems like I need some better chemicals, pads, and most importantly, better techniques! I remember someone mentioned about the Meguires video tape. Is it good? Are there other ways I can learn how it "should be done"? E.g. when using my PC for the first time today, I see some hopping pattern of polishes on the car surface; and don't know if it normal or bad.



Also, to those in Toronto, is there a good local shops that you get your products from or do you all buy online from the US? I got my PC 7424 from Canadian Tires, but they only have the PC polishing foam accessory for the PC.

Welcome Dave! I would say get a hold of Davids CD it is a wealth of information. You can also check out the propper auto care webpage as they have a lot of good advice as well. Just remember to work within your comfort level. If you try to do and use every chemical that everyone on here uses you will go insane. I tried to keep up with all the new stuff but I ended up with a butt load of products just sitting in my bins, I couldnt use them all up and they just went to waste. Find a few you like and stick with them. Welcome and good luck!

Welcome :wavey About that Hopping pattern,is this during a Wax or polish? I had this happen to me during polishing,but came to be the car I was working on was so dirty that it needed a couple more (lets say 4) goings over with the paint cleaner.

More people will probably post on what really is going on though:D

Get some Clay,and start going at it ,oxidation and all that stuff will just hold you back.Even if you cant see it you will when you try to take your polish off .
 
I had someone in the States buy me the PC from lowes and bring it up for me.



Stores that you can get to from the GTA:



- Cmax:/NAPA pricey but have a good selection of Megs (including pads) and 3M products



- The Barbershop in Square One, Mississauga: Carries Zaino products and saw a 3M swirl remover



- Car Buffs in Square One, Mississauga: Carries Autoglym and Zymol products



- Roberts Auto in Toronto: Carries some of the Meg's line



Best bet for a lot of stuff is online though. The two Canadian online sites I've found that have great products and service are http://www.eshine.ca and http://www.carcaresmart.com.

I'll try to order the CDs and the 6" counterweight online; then try out the stores YouGottaBeLeaf mentioned. I think I'll just get a better backing plate w/pads for now, since the homemade plate and pads I got from CT doesn't feel that good.



Afterwards, I'll try to find cars to pratice on! :D



BTW, the hopping is with the polish. After going over the pane many times, the hopping did improve a little. I'll try to clean it up more with clay and see if it'll fix it. Thanks!

NAPA seems to carry a fair number of Meguires products. You may also want to check with Chris Pace at www.eshine.ca(or .com - can't remember). He carries Poorboys, which, IMHO, are the best thing on the market (no offence intended to our other fine suppliers and sponsors). Good service too (and prices). Also, if you look as far west as you can, you will find CarCareSmart in Burnaby, also very good service and reasonable prices.



Good choice on the PC. Didn't know Cajun Tire carried them.
