Another Meguiars G110 bites the dust

3rd one since March. Hope my Meguiar's distributor has one in stock. This one worked fine for 4 months or so, the first two bit the dust pretty quickly. It was working fine until today, then I noticed it was slowing down when I'd put any pressure on it and by the time I was finishing up, it would only start up if I put the speed on 6.

Meguiar's has been really good about replacing the bad G110's but it is still a pain when they crap out in the middle of a job.

scott... you might want to look into the new Griot's D/A (initially i would go with the XP, but now this has sparked my interest), it has a lifetime warranty and a little more power than the PC7424XP (still can't go wrong with the PC IMO)...

This is the whole reason I went with the XP. I got burned on the UDM failures (3) of them, so far the PC has worked great. But now that I have jinx myself I am sure it will go up in smoke tomorrow.

Going to get the G110 replaced again, but probably going to get a PC XP as well. I use my Dewalt rotary for corrections but a lot of people are happy with a basic (1 polishing step) detail and a DA buffer works best in those situations.

If you haven't owned or used a Flex DA yet I would highly advise getting one. I used to use a two step rotary correction/PC jeweling method for my more serious corrections. I have found that I can get the same result in half the time with half the equipment by using the Flex machine. It is truly a "force multiplier." I liken it to bringing a gatling gun to a knife fight. RIDS don't stand a chance. I'm shocked by how much correction I can achieve with just an LC white pad and some Menz P085RD. For the really tough stuff I use an LC Orange pad and Menz power finish first. I get absolutely flawless results and the machine is lightweight and easy to use. Put the Meguiars down already!

Boy all this talk of multiple failures of both the original UDM and the G110 sure do test my faith in the assertions by the mfrs. that these aren't (virtually) the same machine.

Flex is $275, I already own a Dewalt. For real correction, that is what I use. I can finish out hologram free with a rotary. I just use DA buffers for quickie details where the customer understands the amount of correction is limited-or doesn't even care about it as long as the car is shiny.

However, with how hard paints are getting and that I can finish out hologram free with #205 and a Meguiar's yellow polishing pad, I may be able to put down the DA for good. ;)

BTW, I have to put in a good word for Wash Solutions in Dallas, my local Meguiar's distributor. As usual, they were very good about swapping out my old G110 for a new one. Aaron had one on the counter waiting for me when I got there. :)

What gauge extention cord are you using? I used to use 16 gauge and my g110 started to bog down occationally even when it was not on any surface. A thread on MOL said the small cord causes the motor to overheat or something. It eventually stopped working and they sent me a new one.

I now use 12 gauge cord and it works better than the old one. I can apply more pressure without it slowing down.

You should ALWAYS use thicker extention cords than your machines power cord. Kinda thought that was just basic common sense.. The longer the cord the thicker it should be as well. The power draw over the length will heat up the motor. and then there's certian motors that should never be used on an extention cord at all (i.e. air compressors, welders, etc etc)

I've got a 16 gauge extension cord. Doesn't seem to cause a problem with my vacuums (which draw a lot more current) or my rotary. No problems with the PC, UDM or Cyclo I used to have either. :nixweiss

My distributor says they've had A LOT of returns but the latest batch seems to be holding up well and all the issues have been successfully addressed.

I think after three of them I would pitch it. LOL I had my pc7424 for years now. its been beat, tossed once or twice, dropped you name it. and you know what. everythime I use it. It fires right up like day 1!

having both the G100 and G110, i wonder what will happen if the G100 (lifetime warranty) ever goes out (like you, it's been through it's fair share of hours). i dont think i would want another G110...

Like you Al, was going to spring for a new XP, but after some posts on the new Griot with a life-time warranty, I think it's a no brainer.

i'm liking this, and would return it if i wasn't satisfied...

At Griot's Garage, we want you as a customer for life. Everything you purchase from us comes with a lifetime guarantee against defect. We want you to Enjoy our quality products for 180 days and have fun with them! If you don't like it for any reason during this time, return it for a full refund or credit. After that, you're covered with our lifetime guarantee against defect, in which we will either repair it, replace it, or credit your purchase price if we are able to do neither. Some items have a life span during normal use and they wear out. Our warranty does not include replacement of such items after normal use. Of course our guarantee doesn't cover abuse... But you already knew that.

Not a lifetime warranty if you flat wear it out. I'd be willing to bet as a pro, if I went through the Griot's polisher a couple times over 2-3 years they (rightfully) wouldn't keep replacing them.

I bought the G110 in March, if I get to March next year and still have issues, I'll get a different machine.

Just thought I'd throw this in here.

My old g110 had a little notch in the yellow housing. My new one doesnt have a notch. I originally thought the notch was for the wrench to fit when putting the backing plate on. But the wrench still fits in there without the notch. Maybe the one without the notch is the new/revised version?

The notch is on the bottom in this picture. There is also a ring of oil around the inside of the housing. My new one doesnt have that either.

IMO you REALLY need a better extension cord, especially if its a 100 footer.
