Another Beautiful Lexus Design: The 2006 IS

I really like it! Lexus is definately putting out some better designs lately and I think it's great.

i agree w/ most here....looks like everyother silver 4 door sedan driving around. i'd save some quid and take a look at the Mazda 6.

cant really complain though...it looks great.

Lee,

Forgive me for saying anything. I only meant the c pillar reminded me of the Maxima, I know the GS and the G35 are similar in that respect. I don't see you jumping on anyone else for saying they don't like the design.

Paul

Forgive this heresy. But I like the fact that Lexus was not chasing the sports car crowd before. I've always thought the LS was the ideal Lex and I'm going to be pretty upset if they jazz it up and make it a lot sportier. My hope is that the top of the line will remain an elegant, restrained three box design that oozes indifference to racers and the latest styling bling.

So far I am not encouraged by the spy pics of the 2007 LS.

I don't mean to be too harsh Ben. I just think the car is very different from a Maxima. It just seems much more sporty. The c pillar is somewhat similar but not enough to evoke a Maxima in my opinion.

I confess that I have been very well treated as a 2 time Lexus buyer, so my views may be biased but for all the right reasons.

The new kilobuck sports car due up soon will be even more different than prior Lexus products so we yet find a design to excites everyone here.

Jvcn,

I agree about the LS remaining somewhat staid as a proper flagship luxury cruiser should be but I can't blame Lexus for going sporty since the market surveys indicate that BMW is gaining market share for younger buyers. I don't want Lexus to evolve in the future into a Buick-like company only appealing to older folks.

Hi Lee,

Yes, it was only that one aspect that reminded me of a Maxima which I am not that keen on. The current one looks too heavy in the rear to me. To get back on track I agree with your comments on Lexus. Let's hope they never become like Buick... shudder...

Paul

Don't worry Lee, I don't see the Maxima in the GS and certainly don't in the new IS. I think people go looking for similarities whenever they see a new Lexus design and when you go looking for similarities you're going to find them. Like someone else said, you can only make a car (something that must share many characteristics) look so different from EVERY other car on the market.

Anyways I think this is a huge improvement over the current IS, when I was shopping I actually would have looked at this, while I never even looked at the current IS. Looks to me like the IS has finally grown up. THRILLED to see the overplayed altezza lights gone too. I can see people choosing this over a 3 series, when I could never have seen that with the current IS.

AFAIK it will have a manual and will have a coupe and convertible option to follow.

Such as the S2000's 240 HP at 7,800 RPM and its mind blowing 162 lb.-ft. torque at 6,500 RPM? No thanks. I'm glad Toyota maintains low RPM power. :)

Hey, this car is suppose to be a "sports sedan" not a off-the-line dragster. So I want a whole 500rpm more to work with and more flexibility. Acura sure as hell isn't giving anybody a RWD sporty sedan :(

You're right, most of the buyers would prefer it with low-end torque so it can be driven around like a Buick, so maybe this isn't the car for me. Alas, I can't afford one anyway.

Considering the car will likely be driven mostly in an urban setting, low end power is more desireable. Nothing like pulling out into heavy traffic and waiting for the engine to reach its peak power.

Even the 3-series has a 6k redline (according to picture, couldn't find it written on BMW's site), and we all know a BMW, regardless of model, is more of a driver's car than any Lexus.

I would not be so sure Greg. I just read a terrible review of the new 3 from the respected Car magazine in the U.K. They say the new 3 has no tactile feedback for the driver and is really boring despite all the great tech.

The new GS drives like a BMW; I have not driven the IS yet.

I have a hard time believing BMW would take a step back in handling with the new 3-series as the current one, especially with the Performance Package, handles nicely.

Have you driven the current 5-series?

Also, Steve's comment regarding the new IS is just personal opinion based on press releases. No news yet as to how much of a driver's car it will be.
