An artform.

and they're not the category I prioritize most highly, not by a long shot :grinno:

I can only imagine what you're like in that category! :xyxthumbs:

I don't think it's art, but skills of a craftsman, or tradesman. The cars themselves though can be considered art in my opinion.

I tend to gravitate towards the 'craft' terminology for the *actual act* of detailing.

I am also thinking, however, that the 'triangle' detailing act - recording - presenting is an art form of some sort. It becomes a vehicle of expression, communication and inspiration between the detailer/creator and the reader/spectator.

I can already hear comments like 'cmon, it is all done for marketing/promotion' or something similar. But even if that were the only motivation, it would be commercial rather than aesthetics driven art, but art nonetheless.

Finally, using everyday objects (a car in this case) as 'vehicles' of art (excuse the pun) is a common practice (i.e. Warhol's using soup cans etc.).

Perhaps some day, like MoMA, we will get a MoDA. I vote Acc for curator :).

It's funny, reading this I can see where detailing may be considered art, like the landscaper that takes a rough yard and cuts beautiful stripes in it, or the wife taking our living room from hell and making it Martha Stewart worthy. Then I look at the turd on wheels in my driveway that the guy just dropped off, he said it's "really not that bad" yes Homer, it is. I'll spend hours undoing years of neglect, abuse and who knows what. The Mythbusters proved you can polish a turd, heck, I knew that years ago after a Chevy Impala I spent all day on. But is it art? Personally, I'm putting it in this file, remember the Three Stooges when they were hired to sell Brighto? Curly said it's an auto polish, Larry claimed it's a spot remover, they argued and ran up to Moe for an answer, Moe (the smart one LOL) when asked what it's for, slapped both and said,"It's for sale, now get busy!" So, is it art? It's a detail, now get busy!
