Am I charging too low of a price? $18?

Running my mouth??? you're the one all but telling this kid he's not even good enough to hold your sack but I'm the one running my mouth huh???... mmm K if thats how you want to play I guess.

It takes me on average an hour and my customers still complain about how long it takes and sometimes I get tips. This is why I am moving to a waterless system so it will take me a lot less time.

I don't get multiple cars per day, but like 1 or 2 per week. Like I said, its not a full time gig. But I may do more marketing...

I am scared to raise prices because what if I lose customers? I agree, I think I should charge more but I have all my business cards and website at the $18 price tag. :( What do I do?

Going to a Waterless System is not going to speed up the Detail Process. That is if you are doing it right. There are no corners that can be cut detailing. The most you can do is use the right product or tool for the job and cut your completion time down, thus making your money in less time. But every surface has to be done in a big car or little car, truck, van etc. You can not skip steps either. This will lead to poor work and ZERO customers real quick. Do it Right or don't do it! You work is a reflection of YOU!

hydro and I have been PM'ing back and forth. its too late to try to get sh** started.. i honestly think he does better work than some people on here that DO charge quite a bit more than 18 bucks.. so, macaroooni, your words on this thread mean nothing..

A waterless process will absolutely 100% speed up time.

You do not have to lay out a wash capture mat, set up the reclamation system, break it down, put it back, then properly dispose of the waste water.

Like has been said, "DO IT RIGHT!"

what it all comes down to is NO, THE OP IS NOT CHARGING ENOUGH FOR HIS SERVICES, PERIOD.. would you wash/detail/whatever vehicles for $18 bucks?? I think we both know the answer to that, so im thru with it.. what diference does it make if 'he's a college kid trying to save beer money' or whether he is a career detailer?? your same theory applies here.. so his work is worth LESS money because he is a college kid saving for beer money, but he performs the same work as some detailers charging 4 times that much?

I wouldn't pay someone more than $40 to come to my house and wash my car, no more. that's why I do it myself. I just dont value it. A correction is another story.

You haven't seen this kids work. It could suck to high hell. He could make you a mint if he was in your area F'ing up cars, you'd get to fix them.

On the other hand, if he was in your hood and good, he could steal business....

It's nice to see (yet again) that you can go behind the sceens and make up for being such a jerk on here. You seem to have this annoying knack for demeaning people and and getting into all out pi$$ing matches and then sending them PM's to apologize. As I'm sure if you go back and re-read this catastophy of a thread you'll easily see you're the only one trying to down this kid and cause crap with him. Then you try and turn the entire thread into a "All about me" thread and what your business structure is, and what you charge, and how much you made in a day. I mean I'm an a$$ and I tend to take a lot of flack on here for being a little less than "PC" but in this case and alot of your recent post it's very easy to see something is ruffling your feathers for some reason.

Do you make that much every day?

im curious to!

740 a day times a 5 day work week is $3700.00 a week now times that by 52 weeks a year! and your income is $192,400 if this is true gee's. im really doing something wrong after 11 years! although you may be more exsperianced then me! im not sure. but **** i need to go mobile and just wash cars! lol i think that kinda money makes us all think why but our *** doing all these paint corrections and other things! lol i think i should get my boots on lmao

well, to satisfy curiousity and because i dont really care who knows what.. I have ZERO competition within 100 miles of me! Here is how my week goes.. Mon, Tues, Wednesday are open to appointments.. Thurs and Friday are reserved for a large corporation in my area. EVERY thurs and fri I start at 8am and work until 4pm, no lunch break. There are 60 company owned vehicles that are receive the 'basics' once a week. wash, dry, vacuum, dust interior, clean windows. no tire dressing, no armor all, no polishing or waxing anything.. THEN, the employees personal vehicles. It varries from 10-50 per week.. there is no guarantee for those.. but the flat rate I charge for company vehicles is 30 per and 35 per for SUV's. Employee vehicles are also flat rate 30 per, plus add on's like quick wax, steam cleaning carpets/mats, etc.. So EVERY week that is a MINIMUM of $1800 (only company vehicles) GUARANTEED! Then on Sat and Sun, I park up at a local country club and offer the 'basics' again. My flat rate up there is 30 outside, 30 inside. I average 70-90 customers in a 2 day weekend (when the weather is permittable). About 70% of the customers want inside/outside package, while the other 30% wants just outside. So every weekend that the weather is good, and throughout the golf season, I average $2400.

Like I said, there is no competition here, so all of the business is mine. Basically, my appts on mon tues wed are money that is not 'needed', but im not going to turn it down obviously! At this point, I do not see the point of doing 10 hour jobs for 3-4 hundred bucks. The volume jobs are where its at!

So weekly (knock on wood!) I am averaging $4500.. My partner is my wife (she does interiors for me), and my brother works basically full time for me. I pay him 10% commission. So I keep ALL the money in the family!

Does this clear things up for yall? Are you guys not clearing that much?

(I also hire on high school kids part time on the weekend and usually pay them 100 a piece for a 10 hour work day)

A) $3700 is a bad week..

B) Being mobile, I dont have any real overhead, such as location, utilities, etc.. So yeah, im glad I decided to be mobile. To many 'stationary washers' around here..

C) The sarcasm is unnecessary. I am very happy with my work, and the income I am bringing in so far..

You're absolutely right about that. I use to gross $500K/yr doing dealer work for many years.

In case you didn't figure it out yet, Autopia caters to the "high end" crowd that has no intention of caring about high volume recipes to make butt loads of moola. Keep doing what you do and grow, grow, grow....

oh, i am happy to be a member of this site! i WANT to learn more about being a 'high end' detailer! there is so much i do not know about detailing (ask jakerooni and slimjim). I plan on getting better and learning to use different machines and techniques, but for now, i got to pay the bills.. so yeah, im not happy with the quality of work when doing volume jobs.. but the money is just too freakin good! i figure that when things get beyond my abilities of accomplishing, i will upgrade to a new truck and trailer and pass this one down to an employee, and let him and his crew handle the volume washing jobs.. then i can do the high end crowd..

wait, wait wait

i start my first volume job tommorow. 30 day trial period for a large corporation. 60+ company vehicles. They need them done once a week @ $30 per. Thurs and Fri of every week. This includes: wash, dry, vacuum, and dress. Thats about it. No waxing, steam cleaning, etc.. I am going to hire two people to handle this for me after I secure the contract. 12 month contract at the end of the 30 day trial period! I am excited about it! Like I said, its my first volume job!

So in 2days you've gone from a 30day trial with a corporation as your first bulk job, to all of a sudden averaging 4500/wk.

:hm

Sure sounds to me right now that you're income is substantially less and all the "facts" and "figures" you're throwing out are best case scenario, possibly, in the future, if all your ducks line up; NOT what you've experienced in the past.

Sounds like we got another e-hero on our hands folks :woot2:

Pretty ridiculous that he goes from just starting up the business around 3/10/09 and asking us how to get business, to a few weeks later making over $3500 a week. I do not like to out right call people's bluff, but this seems completely ridiculous. If I am wrong, and this is all true, it is truly an amazing success story, and I apologize.

When your unethical you can claim anything you want. But like the others have said. If it works for you go for it. You're obviously not in my area and don't effect my clients at all.

haha. sure. i pay my workers 100 per day, which equals out to $10 bucks an hour on weekends.. but for YOU.. as long as you sign a contract to wear a skirt and halter top with my imaginary company logo, and wave some pom poms (since you are now my personal cheerleader), I will bump you to $12.50!
