They started charging a fee here a few years ago.
Fire department response is a flat fee of $250.00 but if you actually have fire damage your Insurance picks up the tab.
 
Hence the smiley, it was meant in jest. I can tell you that if you take a ride in an ambulance that was sent to your residence and travel about 20 miles (at least in my area) it's over $3,000. One of my father's friends just got the bill for it a week ago.

yea the ride in the bus costs money here too
 
Yes, and like many things, you get what you pay for.
BLS = Give you a ride.
ALS = Keep you alive while giving you the ride. :)

You could not be more incorrect. BLS before ALS... As well as only 50% of the call volume need als.
I would trade a good EMT for a mediocre Paramedic any day of the week.
 
When I was younger and dumber, I set off the fire alarm twice at my on campus apartment. The first time, I was broiling Italian sausage. I don';t know what I did the second time. I even got a call from the campus folks to attend a fire safety seminar. :)
