Aggressive polishes that are compatible?

Changeling- Yeah, I think you did mention the 5" plate/6" counterweight combo.

One thing to watch for is the "cookie cutter" effect from using the 5" plate with larger pads; this is most likely to happen when you apply pressure. It's never been a real problem for me, but it *has* been for others.

IMO switching to 5" pads won't do all that much, it's the smaller 4" that perform so differently. I used 5" pads for quite a while before the 6-6.5" ones became my "standard medium-sized pads" and the functional differences between the two were negligible in my experience. The functional difference between the 4" pads and anything larger *is* significant, so *that* is the next big jump to make.

Did you ever find the 05933, or something else more aggressive than the 05937/8?

Many many years ago I use to use all 3m products and I went to a body shop supply store to by some more and they were all sold out. I was in desprite need , so I tried some Presta ultra cutting creme and some Presta 1500 cleaner polish and I was beyond amazed at the gloss and the performance. I have never looked back at 3m products again. I have turned stock paint into show paint with presta compounds. Plus it is sold otc at body shop stores. So far I have not found a compound that has compared to presta not even menz. power gloss.

There is absolutely no 05933 to be found locally, I'm going to try some shops closer to Washington DC, but I have my doubts because of the huge amount of body work in this area, but you never know. Also I will check Hagerstown Maryland. It's about 50 or 60 miles away but more rural than DC, we will see! On Line, it's $30.00 per gt. delivered give or take.

As for the cookie cutter affect, it seems that is more a function of to much pressure on the PC 7424, I'm aware of the problem, thanks. I am just going to let the PC do the work with very little pressure.

Take care, Changeling

Forgot to add, if I can't find it (05933) after this I will probably start leaning toward the Menzurna IP, supposedly it is in the same basic category of aggressive polishes as the (05933) and less expensive.

The perfect companion to the MG you have would be the 3M PI III RC (rubbing compound) #05933. The MG will do a good job cleaning up anything left by the RC. Those 3M "twins" are still two of my favorite polishes, but you'll run into the same problem finding it because it too has been discontinued..... it's still around, but you might have to hunt a bit like you did for the MG. Doing a very short search here is one place that sells a quart for $22 (plus $7 shipping):

3M Perfect-It III Rubbing Compound (qt)

Other polishes about equal in cut to the 3M RC would be Poorboy's SSR 2.5, Meg's #83, and perhaps Optimum Compound, just to name a few.

Below is a thread that lists compounds, polishes and glazes sorted by cutting ability. It is a bit dated and some of the newer stuff isn't listed, but it is a pretty decent guide:

Edit: Accumulator beat me to the punch while I was looking up links, but I knew he would also say go with the RC ;)

John, thanks for the link on getting the 3M 05933. I ordered it tonight (Dec 31, 2006) Now how can you go wrong with that kind of ordering date (Happy New years).

Spending time, gas, phone calls, hell john it's just not worth it! Now it's on the way!

Yeah, sometimes it just isn't worth it to try and save a couple of bucks when you factor in the time and gas you spend looking...... especially for a discontinued product...... plus you save a little bit on tax.

Have a great New Year!
