Aggressive PC Combo!

If anyone is looking to remove some serious defects with a PC and leave a finish nearly LSP-ready, I found a great combo today.

I used a 50/50 mix of PG and IP and an orange Propel II pad via a PC with great success today to easily remove 2500 wet sand marks. Normally I use a rotary for nearly everything, especially for removing wet sand marks, but I felt like experimenting and really wanted to try out the orange Propel on my PC. I lightly sanded the car down to knock the edge off the orange peel and then polished with my PG/IP mix - the wetsand marks were completely removed in three slow passes and it left a finish nearly LSP-ready.

I attribute the success of this "Experiment" largely to the firmness of the orange Propel foam (same foam as the new Sonus Swirl Buster pad), allowing me to exert a TON of pressure on the pad, giving me great cutting results and ensuring the Menzerna abrasives broke down completely (and I promise you, they did).

Yes, Menzerna being Menzerna, I did get some dusting. But not until the product started to dry in the pad after a few panels. So if one really wanted to minimize the dusting, change the pad out every couple panels (or rinse frequently if you don't want to pony up for a bunch of pads).

Thanks! I may try that with the probably equally stiff Meguairs burgandy pad and mixing Optimum Hyper Compound with Optimum Polish. Not exactly sure how it will finish down, the Meguiars pad can impart marring unless the paint is pretty hard.

Wouldn't that equal Optimum Compound?!

Your Pink Wax magic potion got me thinking about mixing same product family products and I posted a thread a couple weeks ago regarding this without much feedback.

Let us know how it goes though!

OC with the orange propel pad on the rotary is awesome!

RAG, Did you try with PG by itself or did you figure that it would not be LSP ready?

Also did you have the PC at speed 6 for this?

GMblack, the speed was set at 6.

In the past I have done spot corrections with PG straight up using 4" Orange (again, same foam) LC pads. The finish was not quite as LSP ready, but a quick follow-up with OP left a perfect finish. Also, PG is so paste like (such a high concentration of abrasives) that it doesn't spread around very well and dries out a bit too quickly for a PC, so I find that I get better buffing characteristics by mixing IP and PG - the cut is equal to Hyper Compound IMO.

I think PG is the strongest compound that can be safely used with a PC - other equivalent cut compounds use abraseives that are too large IMO.

Scott, as you well know, you should even get more cut with the burgandy pad. Of course, it will not finish down as well (I find that once the burgandy pads are broke in and softened/wet with product, they finish down a bit better, but initally - man to do they cut!).

Scott, I have mixed OP with OHP for rotary use - the combo is in fact stronger than OC alone.

I tried the PG/IP combo on 2000 grit wet sand scratches, and after three slow passes the sanding marks were 95% gone. All that remained were barely detectable "waves" or indentations in the direction I sanded (well, those that have removed wetsand marks know what I'm talking about).

And I'll say it again - for a compound mix, "THIS STUFF FINISHES DOWN AMAZINGLY WELL." And once covered/caked with product, the orange Propel is actually quite soft, yet still stiff which I like for cutting with the PC.

I also compared this combination to Hyper Compound - agressive-wise, I could not tell a difference. IP/PG finished down a tad better, but the trade-off is slight dusting. I like both!

Recall: I did a massive detail on a black mustang yesterday and used the IP/PG combo on a hard to reach spot on the trunk where I had sand to knock the "edge" off of some orange peel - I used the PC here because I couldn't get to it with a rotary. Used the 4" orange pad - left heavy marring that was a PITA to get out. I stopped using the SSRs with a PC becuase of "marring" or gouging by the abrasives similar to what I got last night - of course it only shows up on black. I will do more research on the next black car I detail - untill then, use with caution.
