Advice polishing/cutting pads and compounds

It has been about 5 years since I did a cut and polish. So many different types of pads on the market these days. Is there a certain shape/type which is most favorable? It is amazing how fast new products come to the market. Will using them on a black car. Also, any personal favorite compounds you would use on a black automobile?

Assuming it clear coat, doesn’t matter what color it is. We’ve been extremely happy with Griot’s Boss system. 4 creams and a pad set will take care of any type of paint. As far as cutting, microfiber. This is assuming you’re using either a small throw da or a long throw. I don’t even own a rotary, this system allows me to do anything that I used to do with a rotary.
 
I agree with the BOSS system of pads and polishes, but I`d stick to an 8mm DA over a long throw. Instead of BOSS Finishing Sealant, I`d go with CarPro Essence as it is more durable and gives a higher gloss. Instead of microfiber cutting pads, I`d go with a wool pad of some sort. For a finishing polish, I`d go with Menzerna SF3500 or SFP3800.
 
Jescar Compound on Rupes wool pads is my new favorite cutting combo. For finishing I still like Menzerma 3500 and a Rupes yellow pad. It’s a tough combination to beat on hard German paint systems.
 
Turbo1002- Noting that I wouldn`t use a rotary either (never touch either of mine any more), I wonder:
-What kind of abrasives do you prefer (diminishing, non?)
-What kind of pads do you prefer (wool, MF, flat foam, other foam?)s
-What level of correction are you after and how much clear can you afford to cut off?
-How hard/soft is the clear in question?

THAT!! Thanks for posting it. Drives me nuts when people act like a white/silver car can be treated differently from a black one.

Look up Scholl. They are for both rotary and orbital polishers. And makes some awesome polishes and pads. Scholl S40 is a great finishing polish and S3 Gold XXL compound combo with the white spiderpad for cutting hard to medium hard paints.

Would be intresting to hear what people think of the Rupes rotary pads and especially the yellow foam pad which many has as a favorite as in the standard version för longthrow polishers. And also the new Rupes twisted wool pad would be interesting to hear how that is.

Sonax Perfect Finish is a well liked polish/ finishing polish made for rotary but works even great on orbital polishers too.

What products do you have now?
 
Yeah everyone here seems to love the Griots system. The compounds get raves. I went with Car Pros clear cut and essence just cuz it was a steal on Black Friday. The seem to be a popular combo

Used Scholl S30 w yellow Rupes pad recently, did well. Stupidly designed bottles if ya buy the small one. Removed light marring from decal applicator squeegee, nice finish.

GG Correcting Cream w B & S Uro-fiber has done well on some pretty aged paint, finished well.

Angelwax Redemption is a very nice finishing polish, bit more cut than Scholl S40 but finishes nearly as well.

Lotsa fun stuff out there...

Also, what is the year, make, model, and color (Jet Black, Metallic Black, etc.,) of the car ?
When you worked on it last, way back when, how did it turn out ?
What is the condition of the paint of this car today?
I learned how to use a Rotary when I was 10 or so..
Nothing wrong with using one, I have used mine for decades in my Detailing Business..
I dont create swirls, holograms, etc., or issues with it either...

Spot on. Rotaries are like a doctors scalpel. In the right hands, they are extremely effective and save tons of time. In the wrong hands, they are devastating. Nothing wrong with using a rotary, I use mine all the time for heavy cutting. I have not gotten to the point yet where I can finish out perfectly with a rotary, however. I`m almost there, but not quite.
