Advice from a pro

I have listened but I also don't pay much attention to the other forums so I just thought it was the way they all were.
It isn't your fault!
It just seems that sports, guns, knives, food, dogs and so many others I can't remember have more interest to members.
All those subjects are fine, but it is a detailing site.

The intent of this thread was to mock a post from another forum. I felt (and still feel) that the mocking was undeserved. At no point did this guy claim to be a pro detailer. At no point did he claim that NuFinish was the greatest product.

He states that this was the first time that he waxed a vehicle. He used NuFinish on both of his vehicles. It is a safe bet to assume that neither vehicle had been waxed recently, or even at all. NuFinish is a strong cleaner wax, so it was bound to improve the finish. He said that the vehicles looked great (keep in mind, the guy has never waxed a vehicle before), but the swirls from his wife's use of a scrub brush were that much more visible. We don't know what the brush was. It could have been a household brush, or it could have been the brush at the local car wash.

He even stated a desire to try a scratch remover product in the spring. It obvious that he is just learning about detailing. What is his reward for this? He gets his post copied to a detailing forum to be mocked by people with more experience and knowledge. I just don't see the humor in it.

A lot of times, people will post their experiences at the local car wash where people use the wash brush, drop a mitt on the ground and use it, or use dirty bath towels to dry a car. We are amused by them and like to poke fun at them. This guy was doing something for the first time, used a popular and recommended product and expressed a desire to take it a step further. I really don't think the two are the same.

Maybe I'm just an old fuddy duddy. Maybe I'm just a lousy wax salesman. Maybe I should sell him a clay bar kit, a couple different polishes/compounds/swirl removers, a bottle of glaze, a bottle of sealant, a jar of wax, a quick detail spray, a bottle of car soap, a different bottle of wax because his wife's car is a different color, a pile of microfiber towels and special soap for those towels. Maybe after he does a six step detail (plus the multiple coats of wax and/or sealant), we can welcome into the fold of real detailers.

Again, I just don't see the humor from picking on a guy who is actually making an effort.

Point well made and I for one am going to make an effort not to do it again.

I feel like Frasier Crane poking fun at a new wine drinker.

Personally it was the circumstance I found funny. I could care less who the guy was. Oddly enough I laugh at the Darwin awards too, maybe I should reevaluate those things that make me smile. :D

You have a point. I do tend to poke fun maybe more than I should. Maybe that is one of the reasons most of our current threads are not discussing detailing products and proceedures. Other than some showcase pics the whole front page is filled with off topic discussion.:hmmm:

I'm looking at AutoGeek's forum right now and almost all the front page threads are discussing a product, detail tool or detailing business management.:(

Why is this not happening here? Is it something I have done or not done? This is an open discussion detail forum and I have tried to make everyone feel comfortable talking about whatever detailing product or proceedure they want.

I'm really kinda baffled about this. :dunno:

Troy...There are couple of things going on in the lack of detail threads here at DC...we have a very close knit group that show up here daily...I think that we've discussed a lot about detailing, and have run out of topic for the time being...its also dead winter for us...I know that in my area detailing is at a mere stand still...We don't have an influx of new members or ones that post seasonal login currently...

This site is a family of sorts and you can see it when a new member signs on...I recent talked on the phone with a member here...it was like the guy knew me...talked about threads that we had posted in over the years..family like!

I think that the bottom line this is a great and well run site...the detail threads will come back to the top once the weather gets better.

As why AG forum is all detail...that's because its not personal like DC is.:D

^ That's a great point. I just decided to leave one of my very favorite forums because of the internet attitude they have there. You know the one. Where you don't have to be polite simply cuz the person isn't right in front of you. I have never seen anything like that here. Everyone here does seem like they're all good friends. It's inviting, and it makes people comfortable to talk about anything. :dcrules

I know, I was trying to lighten the mood a little bit and throw something out there. Not much help though, as usual. FYI Troy, I prefer DC over AG. Just my 4 cents

Troy, I want to stop right now and extend my personal thanks for everything you do for this forum. I think that this is one of the better forums. In fact, "the City" has prospered since you assumed the lead.

IMO, the forum has a healthy mix of topics. We are not one dimensional beings. We all have other interests in life, and when you are a member of a community those interests will be discussed with others that you share a common bond, in our case detailing.

Over the years, there always seems to be a lull in detailing discussions when the weather turns cold. FWIW for me I don't place a value of a forum's worth by the number of "click and brag" postings. I'm pretty certain that my viewpoint on those posts are already documented.

I believe this specific thread to be an anomaly. I don't think that any ill will was intended, but from my POV things were taken too far. I voiced my concern and that's that as far as I'm concerned. In a community there will be disagreements. I think that is OK too.

I think I watch too many movies.

I have watched the movie Miracle many times so when I read this that movie came to mind.

"OK boys. Who do you play for?" :rofl

Troy I don't think that you are doing anything wrong, time of year has a lot to do with it. Many of our regular members are located in the colder climates and we are less likely to attract new ones off season. I'm sure that if you go to a boating site it would be pretty quiet as well.

As for the topic, no offense to the OP, but did you invite that poster here, because it sounds like he was looking to learn more.

This is another way that we all can help DC grow.

Getting off my soapbox now

:dcrules:

I don't know who or where that OP is. I know I would not have made fun of the post had it originated here but that doesn't excuse poking fun at it the way I did.

It wasn't the poster I was laughing at though, it was the idea of using a scrub brush (which I invisioned as a hard bristled type) and using Nu Finish which is a mediocre cleaner wax at best and does not live up to the ridiculous claims it makes.
