Acidic wheel cleaners

I used to use Meguiars instant wheel cleaner(red bottle) and its known to be acidic. Will acidic cleaners harm chrome or tarnish it?

For non-clearcoated chrome wheels, you should not use the Gold Class cleaner, you should be using Meguiar's Hot Rims (purple bottle)..... the acidic properties of Gold Class will etch the chrome. :up

my GN stock wheels are non clear coated and when you see the chrome in the sunlight it looks like its not as chromey. does that mean its etched?

its possible...... if they aren't in bad shape, they may be able to be restored with some polishing effort.

I would recommend trying some Mother's Chrome Polish, Meguiar's All Metal Restorer, or Wenol Chrome Polish on them...... this may restore some of their lustre. If not, its possible they're too dammaged, and would have to be re-chromed.

BTW you're sure those GN wheels aren't billet aluminum?

i'm sure they are not aluminum. They are heavy steel chrome wheels. I tried chrome polishes already. the wheels look great under the shade. Its just when the sun hits them it looks less shiny. I think they just need to be rechromed. Well I'm gonna buy aftermarket wheels anyway so I guess it wouldn't matter.
