Acid Rain Damage Repair on Black Cars

You have never used a rotary before and you are going to try Diamond Cut 2.0 with it????

Please be real careful!! There is a big difference between practical and theory. That compound and a roatry is a very dangerous combination!

You CAN, repeat CAN, damage paint with a rotary, even under 1500 RPM. Angle of pad, pad type and product selection, pressure applied to the machine are all critical. 1500 is the MAX you should be running on a clearcoat anyway, better operating speed is between 1000-1200 RPM.

ShowroomLincoln, you are ohhh soooo right about this.

Been there . . . Done that . . . Several times actually.

I agree with Tim here. DO NOT start out using Diamond Cut with a rotary. To do the heat buildup of a rotary buffer you often need less agressive product. Diamond Cut is way to strong to be starting out with. Start mild and work your way up as needed.

I would practice for quite a while before attempting this project on your own vehicle. Remember, once you make a mistake there is no turning back.

Well how about Diamond Cut on the PC, and if I want DACP on the rotary? Which would be more effective (the rotary I am guessing?)

I agree with what you say about practicing but I simply don't have anything to practice with...I know I've read about getting body panels from body shops and the like but easier said than done around here

Offer to do some details for family members. A really good learning experience before venturing off and have the possibility of destroying your car. I made that mistake with a rotary once. There is no going back unless you want to learn how to paint a car.

I would try DACP with the PC and a foam cutting pad first. Then if that doesn't work. DACP with a foam polishing pad and rotary. Be careful, don't rush, and read rotary usage threads throughly before taking the leap (like from the movie Training Day, "Gotta get his cherry popped some day.....) I never expected myself needing a rotary, but I got one and use it with a lot of respect. One mistake and it'll be bitting you in the posterior.

I tried DACP with the PC and it didn't do anything...I mean it got out the swirls but nothing for the other damage (white specks, acid rain etching, etc.). I'm not quite sure how long to stay in an area though...I mean I did one application...working it in until it had almost vanished. I didn't keep putting DACP on the same area

3-5 minutes seems about right for the PC to break down the polish. A few applications might be the key. I find myself having to go over each section 3-4 times with a few products and pads to get the finish I want (foam cutting pad and compound to get defects out, then foam polishing and 3M FI II to remove the compound haze (might have to do 2 applications) then a polishing with foam and a light cleanser.)

With a rotary 2 passes and moderatly swirled surface is near perfect. But it does not take 3'5 minutes to break down a polish with a PC, mor like 1 minute.

Ok guys I am at a loss here and need some help.

I tried Diamond Cut on a PC with orange pad...and didn't look much better. Then I got out the rotary and with yellow pads I tried DACP, Hi-Temp Swirl Remover, and Hi-Temp Heavy Cut Remover...and still not much difference. I measured the temps and it was anywhere from 90 to 115 F. I had the rotary on exactly 1500 RPM (and the PC was on 5 I think)/ When I look closely I still see all these little white specks (size of a pin point). This is on the hood which has it the worst.

Am I just out of luck or is there something else I should try?

Wow, DACP and heavy cut with yellow pad rotary application and still no go? I hope the damage isn't all the way through - someone help this guy!

im having this problem myself on my new 03 CObra. I spent hours Saturday with my pc. I experiemented with my wool pad and dacp and no luck. But damn u cant see a damn swirl anywhere(AFTER THE YELLOW PAD DHCP AND SMR). I have the etching badly on my trunk hood and roof. Ticks me off when the sun hits it just right and i can see it. Ill experiment a bit more with some of the prescribed techniques before i bring it back to the dealer. Just once id like to have perfect paint

Ah, halos spots. I couldn't think of a name for them, but I do/did have these on my brand new car when I got it last year. I have black paint as well.

At least I know what it is now.

People so dont understand that you cant damage anything with a rotary. If you use speeds under 1500rpm unless you hold the rotary in the same place for like 45 seconds you cant burn the paint. Its just a myth I went from never useing a rotary to removeing swirls the day I bought it.

I beg to disagree, i have seen a 1200 RPM rotary strip the paint off the plastic bumper edges with a W9000 FINISHING pad with a rotary.

Are you sure that these white spots are not realy small pits in the clear that the polish residue is traped in. I have gotten that after polishing my hood on my jet black bmw.

I just got a 30x magnifying glass so I will take a better look and see what they are. Also I plan to wetsand a few of the spots and see how it goes (not the white spots but some of the rough cloudy/raised areas)

Hmm..going back and re-reading this, I wonder if a PC, DACP and a wool pad would've helped, still a little safer than a rotary. That said, it didn't get out scratches for me but maybe acid raing marks :nixweiss
