about claying?

So I hadn't even heard of claying until I joined this forum, but I'm going to try it this weekend if it doesn't rain.



Few, stuid newbie, questions though:

1) Do you have to go in any particular direction? I figure no circles, but I wasn't sure if going lenghtwise across the car was best or some other way.



2) Can you clay the plastic bumpers or spoiler?



3) Is this process right:



Wash with Dawn

Wash with good car shampoo

Dry car

Clay w/ soapy water <-Do you wipe off the excess soapy water or just let it run

Rewash car <- necessary step?

Dry car

Glaze <-no polish this time, just glaze

Wax

Admire the results

1.) Any direction in one way is fine. I like to go front to back.

2.) You can clay any surface that is painted.

3.) I will list the process I use:

a: wash with dawn
b: clay car with car shampoo for lube
c: wash car with car shampoo and dry
d: polish (if needed)
e: seal with polymer or wax
 
For direction I do front to back on horizontal surfaces like the hood, roof, bedcover.



Vertical surfaces I do up and down movements.



Yep, clay anything that is painted.



I use a quick detailer for lubricant when claying. It seems when you use water and soap the clay will become mushy and sticky.



I only clay when I plan on polishing so after I finish claying, then I go onto polishing without waxing. I'm also using a quickdetailer so it just wipes up.

So if you clay right after washing without drying the car first, aren't you going to get water spots? or do you figure that with polishing the water spots will get removed since they won't have set in yet.
 
You won't get any water spots unless it really really hot, your car is sitting in the sun and you take all day to clay the car. Even then, it's nothing that All In One or a mild polish can't fix.



So far, I haven't gotten any spots.
