A WARNING when taking a car into a shop

Sticker theft here in the Chicago area is not uncommon & has been happening for years. The best thing I've found to prevent it is to take a razor blade and slice the sticker several times after you put it on the plate; the sticker is useless in 15 different pieces! The sticker is still valid & readable on your plate.

ahunt: Just get a single edged razor blade and slice the sticker several times after applying it to the plate. In addition, make sure you get a metal license plate frame with window and security bolts.

That is the setup I had on the Maxima and I had no stickers stolen. :D

newpassat: It's nice to see another Chicagoan on the board. :D

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll be sure to do that tomorrow when I get the new sticker from the DMV. PrinzII, is there something special about security bolts, or are they regular bolts?

When you leave your car at a shop for them to work on it or just look at it they are responsible for anything that happens. Its called "care, custody & conrole-legal liability". This is a right you have and no matter what they have you sign they are responsible. Just ask who their insurance carrier is and let them know you plan to contact the ins. co. If they still dont step-up to their responsibility you can file a claim directly with their company.

Stuff in the car may not be covered but anything attached to the car deffinetly is.

Well the sticker was only 20 bucks I think, so I"m not going to go through the gamit of dealing with insurance companies for that, unless I have to to get the charges dropped.

"Dealing w/ins. co." is a last resort and in this case probably more work than its worth.

Asking the shop to be responsible is properly standing up for your rights. Plus the $$ out of your pocket.

Yeah I'd like them to pay. Well I have a feeling I'll be going back to the body shop and complaining about their work once my car is legal again, so I don't want to ask for too much. Asking for the car to be re-painted is going to be a big enough thing to ask, and it should be done because the screwed it up real good.

Yeah I don't want to, but it's the best in my area. I suppose if I might have to go to another place about 2 hours away, but I can't afford for it to be fixed for quite awhile unless it's done for free by the original shop.

but I can't afford for it to be fixed for quite awhile unless it's done for free by the original shop.

Tell them you are going to a different shop that CAN perform the work correctly and ask for their address to send the bill, plus $80 for the new tag and driving time and mileage :D

Well it's out of state, so my insurance co. won't cover it I don't think. We West Virginian's can hunt a deer real well, but when it comes to painting a car, well we just don't cut it lol.
