A Jeep Wrangler Question

The first time I took the 2000 Sahara out on the beach in Corolla, NC, I got stuck in some very deep dry sand. I fell into panic mode immediately and started wondering how much air I had to let out of the tires as I was looking at my mini air-compressor. Then I remembered the delicious 4-low option on the switchgear.



Without touching the valve stems, I dropped it in 4-low, put it in second, and let out the clutch slowly. I could have pulled a cabin cruiser out of that dune.



Congrats on the new sled. Now you just have to keep the Jeep accessories catalog out of the bathroom magazine rack. Post-school, I'll have a Jeep again.
 
Yeah this is my little toy now that I'll graduate college in two or three weeks. I'm already creating a list of mods out of the Jeep accessories catalog:cool:
 
Nope, soft top. It's not as loud as I'd have imagined. Now, I haven't taken it up to 70+ mph, so there may a difference there.



And yeah :o , I know better now as far as off-roading goes. I realize I was lucky. Atleast all went well, and even if I never take the jeep in the rough-stuff again (except snow), I can atleast say I've experienced first hand a little of it's capabilities. I'd like to go to a Jeep Jamporee on the east coast sometime to learn some offroading tips.
 
Like Louisiana Jeeper said- never go alone, and always have proper recovery gear. If you must go without recovery gear, make sure that the person you're going with does have it.



Yeah, it's loud and the ride is harsh. You think it rides nicely? Was your first car a go-kart? :lol :p
 
Well, honestly, it feels just like our 92' F150 Flare Side truck. I don't think it feels any harsher/louder than riding in a truck or SUV.

Eh, maybe ours rode better before the lift and tire combo. I don't remember though.



What's the first mod?
 
Well, with warm days approaching fast, I'll likely have the top down a good bit. I think the first thing I'll get is the Window Storage bag from Jeep, locking fuel cap, and door entry guards. Eventually I think I might get the Rubicon diamond-plate frame-mounted body sill guards, skid plates and 31' off-road tires.

Oh yeah, come winter I want to buy a hard top.:cool:

I have a question. I've noticed that my new Jeep idles kind of rough. In addition, when going up a hill for a period of time, I notice a pinging from the engine bay. This is noticeable, but not as loud, when cruising at high speeds as well.

I have been putting 87 octane in the Jeep. That's what the dealership recommended, and the instruction manual. Now, for my Honda Civic, the dealership told me the same, but I've always put 89 or 93 in it. Interestingly, when I use gas from crappy stations (like Sheets), I notice that the engine idles rough. I'm thinking that if I switch to 89 or 93 that my problems will go away. What do you guys think?:nixweiss
 
More pics, post Z2. I used the old Z2 mind you, and only 2 coats. Too much pollen floating around to keep Z'ing it. I'll just swirl the paint up if I continue. I'll have to wait until the pollen level goes down to continue. Looks dang good though!

I'd put some 93 octane in it once and see how it does. Maybe you got some crappy gas. Maybe fill it up with 87 from somewhere better than sheetz the following tank...I always use Chevron gas in my jeep and cobra and have never had a problem.

Will 31 inch tires fit on the stock wheels?
 
Oh yeah, and if that doesn't fix it, take it to the dealer and make them take a look at it! Pinging when going up a hill sounds bad, maybe spark knock (thought you normally got that when towing w/low octane gas though) Someone who knows a lot more than me can chime in.
 
Yeah I'll probably just try some Exxon or Mobile 87 octane gas to see how it does. I'll just run the current gas out until E and then fill it with 87 from one of those places and hope the sound goes away. I've been reading about Spark knock, and am hoping it is just that and is caused by the gas. Although it looks like other things can cause spark knock besides bad gas. But, it looks like the gas is the easiest thing to test first.

I dunno if 31 in will fit or not. I think the Rubicon comes with 31 inch, and the wheels are 16 in not 15 like mine.
 
Well, I'm finding that it makes the pinging noise even if it doesn't go up hills. It seems to only happen when the jeep is in a high gear with slight strain. It does it even on moderatly flat terrain. When the jeep shifts down, the sound stops, even if there is strain on the motor.
 
it is a very old engine design. it is not going to run like a ferrari

stick with the 87 octane



31x10.50's will fit

GY MTR's, BFG MT's, or BFG ATs are good choices
 
I really don't know anything about the engine design. Oh yeah I know it will never run like a sports car, but it still shouldn't be making this noise.
 
Okay, I have some more odd news to report. I took the Jeep out today about 20 miles and it made no sound that I could hear. Boy was I happy. I gassed it up and was driving it back when all the sudden I heard it.



Evidently the sound happens when the engine begins to heat up. Not only that, but it ONLY happens in the last gear, 4th. AS SOON as the tranny shifts into 4th gear and only at 1500 RPMS does the sound start. I can't say if the sound goes away as the jeep goes faster from that point because of road noise. It appears to still be there though but less audiable.

Any new ideas?
